    Well, surprise everyone!

I've been working on this hack ever since finishing Clone Tag Team 2 with the intention of surprising everybody with it once New Year's Day rolls around. And well, in Australia the clock just rolled over to 12.

New Super Mario Advance is a full remake of Super Mario Bros. 2 on the NES, with new and remixed levels. It's all there in the trailer. This hack mixes in classic Mario elements to the otherwise "unusual" gameplay of the USA's Super Mario Bros. 2; aka Doki Doki Panic!

This hack is also a remake of something else- my godawful first NSMB hack which I somehow thought was good enough to even show to the public let alone release. Now it's completely rejuvenated and actually kinda playable.

    Here is the download link:
    http://kuribo64.net/get.php?id=gdcuJ40FO5rbz9Qe

This is an .xdelta patch and can be applied with an .xdelta patcher. Of course, you'll need a clean US ROM of New Super Mario Bros. for Nintendo DS. Please enjoy, and Happy New Year to all you tempers!

Looking good. Congrats on your 4th and I guess 4.5th hacks.
I'll download the patch and give it a go.

I remember when your original hack was released, and the negative feedback it received. Huge props to you for not being disheartened by that and continuing to pour time and enthusiasm into this project.

Your NSMB Advance looks great, I love SMB2 (bought it at launch! I'm so freaking old) and I'm looking forward to playing through this. Thank you very much and Happy New Year!

Thanks for the positive feedback, everyone. I was actually sort of expecting mixed reactions, but people have yet to play the hack first.

This isn't a remake of Super Mario World, but if I recall correctly there was one finished SMW port in NSMB. It's actually titled New Super Mario Advance 2, wouldn't you know it.

By now it's fairly old though.

Thank you i will take a look later, for now i will test your hack :)

Edit: So, tested for a while and i must say you really did a great job. If you don't mind i would ask you a feature, if possible, in a future update. The possibility to save whenever i want, not only when i beat a tower/castle or spend a money.
    Thank you :)

It's definitely possible to add a 'Save Anytime' feature. If people want it enough, I see no problem why not to do it in the future.

Hi, did you remove the middle-level checkpoints intentionally? If so, is it possible to reintroduce them?
    Thank you

    It's really exciting :)

If you still intend doing extra revisions, here are some ideas:
*Stuff requiring ASM: The vegetable pulling mechanic (and vegetables),
    the items popping off screen,
the bubbles containing items needing to be hit 3 times with veggies,
    homing masks of doom,
shadow levels (maybe a switch triggering a door to appear?)
    a new overworld,
a new introduction sequence with a bit of Doki Doki Panic (two kids reading a book and getting kidnapped)

They're in a way staples of the game. Granted, they need ASM, and I understand why wou wouldn't be so thrilled to learn that.

    * warp jars, option to enter jars
(dress them up as pipes: the levels it leads to would use a "seasonal variant that's with odd night/purple/indigo/blue hills on dark/brownish sky)

    * check out BS Mario USA for the SNES, it's the very first game with hidden coins, except it's mario statues.
Also the Super Mario Advance version has Yoshi eggs, except it's two per stage (unlike BS Mario USA which had 3 statues/level)
    Reuse those treasure placements here.

    * Not enough sprite edits, every enemy can be swapped and modified graphically to be more like the original counterpart. Even doors (especially doors)

    * Super Mario Advance 4 had extra e-Reader levels. A good bunch of them is essentially following Mario 2 USA.
You could reuse those level designs if you want to.

Yes, they were removed intentionally. For several reasons:

    1. I feel they aren't necessary.
    2. The original SMB2 had checkpoints every time you use enter a new area, which I can't replicate in NSMBDS because you can only have one checkpoint per level.
    3. Because SMB2 often has levels that go through multiple themes and NSMBDS has a set limit of areas per level so I had to make use of a bug that lets you access areas in future levels in the current level. Because of this, if I had to use a checkpoint in one of these areas and the player died the checkpoint wouldn't work as you have to spawn somewhere in the current level. Not future levels.

Sorry! But this is a pretty easy hack anyway.

This is definitely not my last Mario hack, that's for sure.

I've got one last card in the deck to play.
