I was trading some pokemon when I was taken out of the trade screen and offline, which weirded me out. A few seconds later, the update error appears in-game so I updated as usual, and now the server's getting maintenance. Might be something trivial but I'll test to see if they're taking any new things into account in the servers.
EDIT: Trying to log into the pokemon global link site redirects to http://sorry.pokemon.co.jp/ which displays a message in japanese. Seems like this "maintenance" wasn't planned.
EDIT 2: The "maintenance" in-game seems to have ended, but the page still redirects. Weird...
