Is it the best retro game console for PS1| SNES? $54 USD for the early bird: https://retromimi.com/products/new-pocketgo

Will someone review it in GBAtemp?

EDIT: This is for the OLD PocketGo. Sorry. I misread the above post.

I got one a few weeks back. It's really nothing special compared to the other "Retro Game" handhelds. The buttons are nicer, the D-pad is mediocre. The screen looks very nice, but it is just too small: approx. the size of GBA micro. I would not like to play PS1 games on this tiny screen, even if they ran full speed.

Kinda sucks how it has a different SoC. Most Retro Game consoles have have Ingenic JZ47XX, this thing has Allwinner SoC; that means that games and emulators compiled for RetroGame will have to be rebuilt from source. It isn't super-hard to do but I'm tired of recompiling and messing around with button mappings and SDL_Video_Thisandthat() every time a new one of these el cheapo consoles comes out.
Pretty much everything has been ported, but if you like obscure handhelds/consoles and old games (Nethack, Powder) you're going to have to compile them yourself.

I mostly play handheld games and 8bit retro consoles.

GBA emulation (gpsp) is slow and probably not going to improve. To get almost all the games I like to play working, I have built 3 different versions of gpsp.

I tried a few SNES games and they ran ok, but I'm not a huge fan of that system.

Neogeo color pocket emulation was very slow, even with no scaling. (I don't think this emulator was included by default. I downloaded the source of NGPC and compiled it)

Atari, Coleco, and other super-old consoles ran fine.
There was no emulator for my favorite retro home computer TI99/4A, so I ported dingux-ti99.

All around, I think PocketGo's SoC is a little bit weaker than the Ingenic SoC in Retro Game handhelds.

If you already have LDK or even the old "Retro Game" with the phoney cartridge slot, there's really no compelling reason to buy PocketGo. (Actually, there isn't much reason to upgrade from Retrogame to LDK, but that's another story.) LDK has a bigger screen, is a little faster, and you will spend less time porting stuff from dingux because other people have already done most of it.

@The Real Jdbye, I could see AMD trying to pull off the CPU GPU tandem thing, would be a way to maybe close the gap a bit with Nvidia. Plus it would kinda put Nvidia at a future disadvantage since Nvidia can't make X86/64 CPUs? Intel and AMD licensing issues... I wonder how much that has held back innovation.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
i don't think nvidia wants to get in the x64 cpu market anyways
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
you've seen how much intel is struggling getting into the gpu market
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
and nvidia is already doing ARM
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
i don't think they want to take more focus away from their gpus
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Yeah I think Nvidia s future lays in AI GPU acceleration stuff if they can get that going it's going to be super interesting in the long term
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
AI assisted game creation might become a thing
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
At least that's something I think would be pretty cool.

Don some VR glasses and gloves and talk to the computer and paint entire worlds

  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Many TBs of assets and the programming of something like that is going to be tough but I think it's something we might see in 20 years maybe sooner
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Psionic Roshambo AI assisted game creation is kinda already here, there was recently that AI that can turn any 2D image into a fully modeled 3D object, it's not perfect, but it's a starting point, beats starting from zero

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
before that there was one to generate a fully modeled scene from a 2D image

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but most recently, there was one that actually generates a working unity scene with terrain and textures already set up that you can import right into unity, that's a huge time saver right there

and using LLMs to generate NPC dialogue and even dynamically generated quests is something i'm sure is already happening

will just take some time for games made using those things to be completed and released
