New Nvidia driver cause Windows to BSOD

Nvidia drivers confirmed to cause BSOD on Windows PCs without certain CPU instructions

Do you remember that story about old computers unable to run recent Windows 11 versions due to the missing POPCNT instruction set? As it turned out, the problem is not just about installing the latest OS on ancient hardware. Windows 10 users with old processors may now stuck in a blue screen of death loop due to unsupported Nvidia graphics drivers.

About a month ago, Nvidia published a knowledge base article about the end of support of its drivers on old computers without the POPCNT instruction set (POPCNT stands for population count). It is not just an arbitrary no-support state: installing driver 555 or newer on a system with a supported Nvidia GPU and unsupported processor results in the entire system crashing to a BSOD with the error code SYSTEM THREAD EXCEPTION NOT HANDLED.

Code:
Beginning with the Release 555, NVIDIA display drivers will no longer support older CPUs that do not support POPCNT (Popuulation Count) instruction. While these CPUs are already officially not supported on Microsoft's Windows 10/Windows 11, if a user with a PC using an unsupported CPU attempts to install R555+ display drivers, the PC will bugcheck/BSOD when booting into Windows.

Windows 10 users with systems powered by old processors with still-supported graphics cards (like GTX 750 Ti and newer) may want to tweak their Windows Update settings to prevent the OS from automatically downloading driver 555 or newer.

In all fairness, probably not many Windows users run their Core 2 Duo systems with still-supported Nvidia graphics cards, so the story is unlikely to stir too much drama among Windows users. But if your old pre-SSE4.2 system with the GTX 750 Ti or GTX 950 cannot boot after updating the graphics driver, you now know why. If you do not know whether your system supports the POPCNT instruction set, check out this article.

Anyone have older computer and everyone have be very careful. Apply for all non-gamer and gamer folks must take very careful. Do not install Nvidia driver start with 555.xx and above know to cause BSOD!

Please shout out loud to everyone about this is very important to keep in mind.

Best to use old Nvidia driver for safe reasons to avoid install version 555.xx and later.

Also remember backup your important files, games, etc before bad happen come up cause by auto update from Windows Update (this will force install latest new Nvidia driver without your permission!) or other way...

If new AMD GPU drivers and new Intel GPU drivers maybe follow same like what Nvidia did put something quiet buggy code in new GPU drivers never let people know what happen will go on. Big surprise to everyone! So watch out!

Why not just use the original controller you ripped apart? Cool project but seems like a waste. I made my own controller/ fight stick for switch using an Arduino, and even uploaded my code here on a forum.

Neither 8bitdo controllers nor Old Spice deodorants are some priceless relics, and if the guy wants to faff around let him.

  • Veho @ Veho:
The point is "cramming a controller into a deodorant stick" and not "making the best possible controller".
  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
True I guess, to each they own. I know I've made some projects in the past that are cool to me, but others are like wtf.
  • Veho @ Veho:
Generally most of the "let's cram stuff into other stuff" projects are learning experiences, they're not meant to result in an actually useful product. But you learn a lot.

Once you've done a few of those, building something actually useful will come much easier.

I made myself a soundboard handheld w amplified speaker and 3d printed a case with 10 buttons. Loaded it with bird sounds. I sit on my porch alot and use it to talk to the birds, and they respond back to it. I think its cool but wifey thinks I'm crazy.

I've been on a horror manga binge recently, and I have one thing to say...

    What is otaku?
  • Veho @ Veho:
A Japanese term for nerds who are obsessed with one particular interest even more than their fellow nerds.
  • Veho @ Veho:
And that's coming from a culture where perfectionism and obsession is the societal norm.
  • Veho @ Veho:
So when they call someone "obsessed" you know it's serious.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    Lol damn
  • Veho @ Veho:
So anyway Miyazaki was saying how so much of modern anime and manga was being made by shut-ins who grew up on anime and have never interacted with human beings, so all they know is tropes.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    Stand alone complex?
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Wut?
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Sounds like when people socially isolate themselves they are standing alone
  • Veho @ Veho:
Never heard of it in that context. "Standalone complex" will always be that Ghost in the Shell series

    Ahhh lol
