Nintendo has updated its sales figures with the information from the latest edition of its quarterly results, bringing Nintendo Switch hardware sales to a new milestone. In the published results, we can see that Nintendo's net sales were up 9% compared to last fiscal year, leading to a total of 1.308 billion yen (12.2 million USD). Both hardware and software sales exceeded the company's predictions, as Pokemon Sword and Shield and Animal Crossing: New Horizons broke records and performed incredibly well in terms of sales. Nintendo also cited COVID-19 as a reason for limited production of hardware in certain regions, though this apparently did not drastically affect the final two months of the fiscal year. Overall, Switch console sales were up 24% year over year, selling 21.03 million units, while software sales were up 42.3%, totalling 168.72 million.

The Nintendo 3DS saw a dramatic decrease in sales, reaching only 0.69 million units--a 73% decrease. On the other hand, digital subscription sales and digital download sales were up a massive 71.8%. As of March 2020, the Nintendo Switch has sold a lifetime amount of 55.77 million systems worldwide, surpassing both the GameCube and Nintendo 64, combined.

(1) Operating results for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2020 For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2020, Nintendo Switch Lite launched in September as a compact, lightweight, and easy-to-carry dedicated handheld system, and Nintendo Switch performed very well without losing momentum, resulting in significant sales growth for the entire Nintendo Switch family. Looking at software, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield became big hits, posting sales of 17.37 million units, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, released in March, sold 11.77 million units, which is now the best start ever for a Nintendo Switch title. In addition to titles like Luigi’s Mansion 3 and Super Mario Maker 2 that were released during this fiscal year, sales also continued to grow steadily for popular titles released in previous fiscal years and for titles from other software publishers. The total number of million-seller titles during this fiscal year reached 27 titles, including those from other software publishers. Nintendo Switch also launched in China through Tencent Holdings Limited in December. Because of COVID-19, production and shipments of the Nintendo Switch console, accessories like the Joy-Con controllers, and Ring Fit Adventure faced delays in some regions from February through March, but this only had limited impact on business results for this fiscal year

Not bad for a portable wii u.
The switch wishes it was a Wii U. The Wii u is more powerful, innovative, and dual screened with the option of playing solely on the pad (game permitting). I remember playing monster Hunter 3u on the train years before switch came out. The switch is just a tablet that connects to your monitor/tv, and that's only when you get the non-lite version. /rant

The best thing about the wii u was it's menu music
And the big sexy bulky gamepad. And the exclusives before they were ported to switch. and the easy homebrew. and the huge Virtual console support.and the nostalgia too, can't forget that.
Switch is way better than wii u as is, but it's got a long way to go imo

Also, innovative my ass- Wii u is literally a nintendo DS but hooked up to your TV. that's stupid.
Playing monster hunter 3u on the train is impossible because once that wii u gamepad leaves the vicinity of your wii u it becomes a plastic brick

Homebrew on Switch is extremely easy if you have the proper model and compared to the Wii U's homebrew, the Switch has already surpassed it.

I didn't know the Nintendo 64 had so few sales considering all the amazing games it had.

It did poorly unfortunately. It was hella expensive for the time (I got one, felt guilty on my parents, but ultimately don't regret the experience of owning one). Some of the best games I ever played, obviously almost all dated now.

PlayStation had CD, with much better audio, before long a much, much larger library of games (a lot of filer though too), but most devs abandoned the N64. I'm unsure if any dodgy tactics were used, but if they were, I feel they would have surfaced by now.

I think it was purely due to the N64 have mostly inferior tech and higher price (cartridges cost a lot more than CD).

Then PS got Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil, I could go on. It was by no accident the Playstation brand dominated out of nothing. It was a combination of perfect even execution, combined with severe failings on the part of Nintendo and Sega. obviously, word eventually got out about Playstation and Nintendo partnership falling though. I guess Nintendo had to go back to square one, whereas Sony had a big lead too.

that’s not true for one market power dictates what a company could do

Switch could cater to a beef up home console running the same games why because it can fit within the marketing name , 1080p is the global standard for in home viewing 4K is still no where near the scratching surface with a divided user base Nintendo could take the risk with a Switch Home Console in hopes that people buy both Home and Lite
This was the ultimate failure of the Wii U people thought the tablet worked independently so knowing Nintendo you live by the sword you die by the sword so they will probably take another swing at it.

Also don’t expect a ton of next generation games because their budgets don’t match the risk of failure Slow trickles and why most games will be on both current and next generations (Slight enhancements like what the X does) and I expect more companies to start going after Switch customers :yayswitch:
well i hope nintendo will never go all home console every again, becuase the switch gave light after the dark tunnel that was the wii and wiiu, the wii while it sold was very lackbuster, the standard controls were decent for the gimmicky games but since they had such low number of buttons developers needed to add swigs and gestures and everything and barely any of them coded them well so most wii games have crap controls/control sheme in general, the wiiu was a good idea on paper but nintendo gave it an awful name and worst of all even the console box, most people tough it was a wii addon and not a new console, and the gamepad was decenbt but 480p screen for hd games was preety pitfull and that not even 2 hours batery and like 3 or 4 metters range was even worst.now on switch we finaly have a regular default controll scheme, a ranged mode that doesnt rely on being on range of the actual console, an hd screen even if 720p and switch v2 actualy has a preety great batery life for portable mode, all they need to do is make a switch pro and boost up the cpu/gpu and we are good.

why compete heads to heads with sony and microsoft? it makes no sence to me, you already have 2 console manufactors competing for the beefy home console which they always sell at a lost and much more expensive(heck this new gen is gonna be out of hell on console prices just wait), nintendo doesnt do that since gc days, they clearly decided, hey lets not go head to head and do our own thing, so even if they went back to regular home console, they would make a underpowered home console compared to xbox/sony becuase they dont want loose millions on selling the console like they do.

nintendo never made a console more expensive than 299 and it seems thats what they want to keep as a price point since the regular age crowd are alot of casual gamers that like to buy to play a certain few games and so on, and with 299 they couldnt make a crap that would even be made half as good as ps5, so if they made another underpowered home console they would loose on the hybrid method and again be like the wiiu with no positive points.
