Does anyone know why this is happening? I have been treating my 3DS fairly well, and rarely even use the dpad at all. The D-pad seems to only have problems with the right direction key. It happens only during initial boot after not playing my 3DS for awhile. It takes about 4-5 presses on that key to get its responsiveness back and work as if it was normal. It also makes a louder "clicking" sound compared to all the other keys, and after "warming it up", the sound gets back to normal.

This doesn't seem to be caused by the 3DS booting up, but it happens solely on how long I haven't used my 3DS. It is a problem that doesn't reoccur until it use not used for a certain amount of time.

Maybe some small debris got in the gap of the D-pad and found it's way in-between the contacts. Could even be from manufacturer, maybe like a small piece of plastic from a cutout? And by you pressing it a few times it moves it in such a way to allow contact again? Just guesses. Is it under warranty?

Nope, I bought it a week after launch.

If you feel confident enough you can try opening it up and checking it out. That's what I'd do at least. But to me it sounds like you have something under the D-pad.

Do you think that its possible for it to fix itself if I just use the dpad regularly?

I mean it's possible. You said you really don't use it much so maybe it's a matter of breaking it in.

Is this what it sounds like when you press right on the D-pad?

Nope, it sounds like a slightly "snappier" or louder click than all the other keys if that makes sense. But this sound is only temporary. It lasts for a few clicks and it quiets down back to normal.

My new3DS XL has does the same thing since I opened its box, unresponsive until I really press down hard, then it becomes squeaky for about 5 presses, then it "warms up" and functions normally. Very strange.

Yeah, it sounds like it just needs to be broken in a bit.
