ah yes the good ol' days of corperal punishment in the US. When I was in elementary school we had to hold up books with our arms outstretched if we disrupted class.

Being funny or stupid got the ruler over your knuckles (and those damn old lady teachers could iajitsu with rulers, you'd blink and it would be out, acrost your knuckles and back up on her desk before you'd have your eyes back open).

Or even worse, if you had to go the the principals office he could, and would, break out the paddle...and refuse to let you just stand the rest of the day, you would have to sit on those new welts to ensure you learned a lesson.
