Need help with VNDS variables

so basically when i make a variable in vnds it just doesn't work, it just sets it to 0.
i'm doing this code:

"setvar $VARIABLE +1"
"text variable: {$VARIABLE}"

but for some reason it still shows 0 in the variable text, i've also tried doing "setvar VARIABLE +1" (the same code but without the money sign) and it still won't work.
Does anyone know any fix to this? I've tried looking through other VNDS novels but barely any of them use variables..

I never used this script language myself but the parser of It is not hard to follow:

I was expecting to see something ressembling 'Expr OP Expr', where OP is +, -, *, /, but the only case ressembling this are inside IFs for comparisons ( <, >, <=, >= ), hencenI don't think the language supports that.

Apparently I was just missing one spacebar so thats uncool.
