need advice on hacking

so i have a 3ds xl and a new 3ds LL and its been a long time since i played with it
the 3ds xl if i remember correctly is using gateway while the new 3ds LL i assume is running a cfw. how can i be sure what each one is running
one thing i notice on on my 3ds xl is that it when i powered it on without anything in the cartridge and left it alone it says corrupted memory and shuts down. maybe it was looking for the gateway cartridge(i dont know)? or something. but after a few restart it now doesnt do that anymore. is that a bad sign?
on my new 3ds LL everything is working but have no idea what cfw im using and how to updte everything.

what sd card size do you guys recommmend to use for these 2?

When booting into Luma3DS you should see which version you're on. If it's below v.7.0.5 then you need to update from a9lh to b9s, update Luma3DS to the latest, and then lastly system firmware.

So it boots to the home menu without the Gateway cart? Sounds like something else with the hardware and not a dependency thing on the Gateway.

Depends on how many games, hb apps and emulators etc you plan on installing there. Anything above 64gb is good. You could go up to 256gb or even 512gb, but know that it might behave a bit slower than it normally is, specially with 512gb cards. Oh, and make sure to format them as Fat32 64kb clusters (for +64gb cards), and whatever brand you go with make sure to test it with h2testw before using it to make sure they're not faulty or fake (trust me, you'll save yourself from alot if headache down the line by doing this).
