The obvious choice is the save editors that are around, animalmap is the one most use:

It has been a while since I hacked the game but I seem to recall the text was fairly obvious but it was compressed (bios compatible LZ I think). Audio should just be a basic undub but from what I recall most things were animal speak in that.
