    Hi folks.

A while back I visited here to softmod/apply CFW or whatever the correct term would be for my N3DSXL. I think it was Themehax(?), where I am on 9.9.0-26E. It was for very basic stuff like emulators etc.

My predicament is I need to update the system to access online features and the like. My 2 questions are:

    1. Seeing as I already have a flashcard for my emulators is there much reason to keep this CFW? I understand the potential in this is lesser in comparison to others.

    2. Is there anyway to update the system to get online access without losing the CFW if it is capable of more?

Hopefully this isn't too difficult. Been out the loop for quite a while.

    Thanks.

Are you referring to MenuHax (aka ThemeHax)? If so, that is not a CFW. It is just an entry point into Homebrew Launcher. You can use this to install a CFW (like reiNand). If u just have HBL, you can only do userland stuff, so no CIAs.

I would NOT update. I would downgrade to 9.2 if I were you, then install emuNAND and update it to the latest version (10.5) to have access to online features. Keeping your sysNAND on the same version

Downgrading is at your own risk however, seeing that you are using a European N3DS, but a NAND dump to restore to would be helpful just in case something goes wrong during a downgrade.

    Yes, Menuhax was the one!

I wasn't aware I was capable of downgrading my system using Menuhax. Is there a tutorial anywhere?

    There is one here:
    https://gbatemp.net/threads/simple-guide-to-downgrading-your-3ds.407888/

Keep in mind that this only works on FW version 9.2 or below, so be sure to downgrade to that one. There have been many reports of New3ds's bricking, so a NAND dump before downgrading is an added precaution

If you have emuNAND, it is quite useful as you can have two completely different firmware versions on your system.

Hopefully if everything goes well, you can install CFW on your system, like reiNAND

Otherwise you can downgrade via an hardmod. In this way you will be even guaranteed for any future brick.

Yep. But I don't think the OP has a NAND dump for 9.2, or a hardmod.

Anyways, I will be posting a tutorial soon for this.

A hardmod is safer for going from one fw version to another. But doing a hardmod is a bit more dangerous then downgrading with memchunkhax if youre an amateur or have poor soldering skills.

Without an hardmod or a previous nand.bin it's pretty much a yolo: succesful downgrade or welcome to 10.5 if not hardbricked device. Paying someone for an hardmod should be a valid alternative in my opinion.

With an hardmod installed he should just update his device to 10.5 and make a personal nand backup.

Tbh if there's a risk of bricking my system I'm not sure it's worth it. I don't use my 3DS too much and much less use Menuhax for anything really. I'll give it a look and see what I think. Is it reasonably easy to do?

I would say that it is a valid alternative. Personally, I would pay someone else to do it. But downgrading isnt quite as unpredictable as alot of people think. Alot of the reported bricks have been found to have been user error. There are a few unknown reports still, but they are primarily with the latest build, so it is believed that the build itself it the culprit

Yes, it is but in some random cases for no apparently reasons an error can occur soft/hard bricking your device. I don't want to say that it is extremely risky, actually the chance of bricking your 3ds it's pretty low ( + or - 10%) but it exists. Personally I downgraded my console just an hour after this was possible with the super unstable version of sysupdater. It's worked perfectly at second try and I hadn't a nand backup (just YOLO mode :rofl2:). If you proceed I can advice you to use safesysupdater instead 'cause it seems more reliable.

Yeah, I know. As I've already wrote I personally downgrade my o3ds with the super unstable version of sysupdater which was released more then 1 moth ago.

You can wait until it becomes safer. Gateway is coming out with their own downgrade method that will no doubt be safer.
In the meantime, all you really need to access online is the latest friends system-module, which you can install from CIA using NASA.

Appreciate all the help guys. Out of interest, by doing this is it possible to play Monster Hunter X via ISO rather than a legit card? And if so, could I apply an English patch to it?

What I'm really trying to do is be able to access online on my Pokemon AS game to trade etc But I believe being on 9.9.0 stops that?

Certainly you can install the CIA version of Monster Hunter X ENG (I've installed too) and play it directly from the emuNand. For pokemon AS probably (not sure abot that) you can't proceed with your actual save but ofc, after installed on emunand a version of pokemon AS, you'll be able to trade even via gts.

So you're saying I can no longer continue my Pokemon AS save? Sorry if I'm not following correctly. A lot of this is pretty overwhelming and I haven't a clue about the whole thing. Delving into the unknown with the chance of a brick is quite off-putting. :(

Also, do you have an Engish patch on your MHX as well or do you play in Japanese?

Also, in the first link tutorial that was posted it says N3DS is more likely to brick compared to others. Why is this do you know?

[Just realised the following question is probably stupid as I'll likely need MenuHax to do this] Also, would it be easier to back up my SD card, wipe it, do the downgrade etc on a "fresh" SD card and back up my games and saves once it's completed to make sure no files I have conflict with what I'm doing?

    1) So you're saying I can no longer continue my Pokemon AS save?
AFAK Yes, you can't continue your actual save but at least you will be able to backup and reinsert all of your pokemons using savedatafiler and pkhex.

    2) Also, do you have an Engish patch on your MHX as well or do you play in Japanese?
    Link sent, check your pm.

    3) Also, in the first link tutorial that was posted it says N3DS is more likely to brick compared to others. Why is this do you know?
    Nope, sorry.

    4) Also, would it be easier to back up my SD card, wipe it, do the downgrade etc on a "fresh" SD card and back up my games and saves once it's completed to make sure no files I have conflict with what I'm doing?
Actually I've downgraded without format my SD card but someone says that this make the process safer, so it's your choice. Also, it seems that downgrade from 10.3 should be safer then other fw (no proofs of that but for what I saw about reports of softbricking it seems real). So you should upgrade your device with the last version of sysupdater (https://github.com/profi200/sysUpdater/releases) to 10.3, then using safesysupdater (https://gbatemp.net/threads/wip-safesysupdater.409392/) to downgrade to 9.2. All the fw can be found in that link which I've already sent you.

About cfw (custom firmwares) that you should install probably the best option for n3ds for now is reinand 'cause it supports 10.5 emunand. Actually the last rxtools 3.0 beta can too but it seems unstable for now (dunno, I've an o3ds so no problem for me :P).

Ok. If I kept a file of my save game could I just add the save file to the correct spot on my SD Card and continue from where I left off?

I'm completely unaware of what emunand, sysupdater etc. Are they installed via the HBL? It's been a while since I last dealt with Themehax/Menuhax and it seems the link I had for my internet browser on the console is no longer working. Are there any other ways of getting HBL now rather than using specific games like Ninjhax etc?
