Yay, a Kanji typing (er, writing) game!

http://www.success-corp.co.jp/software/ds/kanji/index.html

Very handy for the vocabulary part of the JLPT so, any candidates out there take note
wink.gif

Like Blebleman says, Japanese isn't that hard to learn. Nothing's hard to learn if you really put your mind to it. If you pick up the basic vocabulary such as "go to..." and the two sets of syllables Hiragana and Katakana then, you'll be able to navigate games fairly easy. Understanding the story is a different thing though and will require more time.

As for me, I self-studied Japanese for a year and then passed the JLPT Level 2 test for the qualification.

I recommend Japanese Online for a good starting point. The native Japanese teachers in the forums (there to improve their English) and fellow Japanese learners are usually very helpful.

Dude, you learned 1000 kanji in a single year? You're good, man.

I realised at what point the JLPT 4 (and even 3) must be a farkin' joke to me. I should go get it. A 19-yr old with a Japanese language certificate must be pretty special....

Hm, a month for the basics. That sounds acceptable. Although I'm curious as to how someone would go about learning something that way. It's not like a have any books on tape on the subject.

For the basics I've got the two "Assimil" books. They seem to be great to start learning. I've got the German version but afaik it's a translation of an English edition (though the series seems to be originated in France...

). Maybe you'll find it somewhere...

I don't know how many Kanji I know because I don't keep count. But, if I take a newspaper article that I can read and run a Kanji count on it, that's roughly about right
laugh.gif
I should probably have taken the level 1 JLPT because even the level 2 test felt easy but, I don't want to waste £50 (US$92/€73) for nothing if I don't pass.

As far as I know, most Japanese learners don't even bother with the level 4 JLPT because it's so easy.

In any case, it's a handy qualification to have if you're planning to pursue a career that'll have some dealings with Japanese stuff or Japan. Ganbare!

Kanji is one of those language that makes me feel embarassed. You see, my family are from Hong Kong but I was born in Scotland and lived there my whole life. As a kid, I grew up reading nothing but Beano and watching cartoons on TV and generally never gave learning chinese a chance (I can speak cantonese but that's it). Shame that I'm trying to learn Japanese when I'm not even trying to learn my parent's native language. But hey, I nailed Hirigana and Katakana but the problem is me trying to learn grammar... and the kanji...

smile.gif

i'm actually quite interested in learning the japanese written language(s), and i'm pushing 30. it's way easier to pick up than i initially thought. helps that i live in chinatown i guess
smile.gif

apparently this title is more of an intermediate level of kanji, so it'll be a while till i can play it properly.

great discussion though, and thanks for the link to japanese-online too.

Chinese is evil. Especially if you've never spoken a tone-language before. Having had a Cantonese girlfriend for a while, I know how evil it is

I still laugh at how my best source for learning Japanese (Kanji) was my Chinese girlfriend who didn't speak Japanese.

Japanese is quite fun once you learn it... Reading manga or understanding anime "raw" is quite a lot of fun~ (not to mention going to japan and seeing all the hot women
tongue.gif
)

So I recommend those that are even partly interested in the language to at least try... its grammar and rules aren't very hard, well in comparsion to other languages... no female or male nouns and stuff like that, conjugation is also cake... so yeah try

TIp for anyone wanting to learn Japanese: just wait until college. Really. The classes go at a brisk pace and speaking in English is discouraged, so you get good immersion in the langauge. You can learn basic stuff on your own to prepare, but without a class, you will definitely lack in the speaking and listening departments.

Or just find a good book and an amazing software helper.

I started to study japanese with the book (that should have this title) "Japanese in comics", by Marc Bernabé, a spanish guy that wrote a whole episodic course for a mangá magazine. The book make japanese learning so simple and fun because it uses a lot of mangá to explain the lessons!

And JWPce is an word processor that is ultra complete, with dictionary. And it is free! Search Google for it. (

) Yay!

True, but not everyone goes to college. I for one plan to take a trade (I'll probably become an auto-mechanic). Four more years of studying shit that doesn't matter, only to end up with a useless degree and student loans out the wazoo... isn't for me.

If college and all that is out of the question you can try learning online... go to http://nihongoresources.com/ and do his lessons, or also read his book http://nihongoresources.com/books.htm (the book that says "this site's grammar book" at the bottom. It's very well done.

As for the game. Pretty fun
smile.gif
, though it does require your knowledge of Japanese to be quite high...

also, kanjigold (search google) is a great free program to learn Kanji

yeah, a college isn't the only place to learn a language well. all you need are good resources and determination. also might be worth to take a trip to that country instead of paying for a class. that's real immersion ;P

Anyway, it's true Japanese doesn't have masculine and feminine vocabulary like say French but, since each Kanji has two readings (Kunyomi and Onyomi) it's kind of similar in a way. Just that Kanji is harder to memorize. Especially when you have to write them
laugh.gif

Indeed. That's why some choose to study a more promising degree with which they can get a job more easily than others
wink.gif
But it's good that you've set a goal for yourself already.

Anyway, besides self-studying via the net and books, I'm sure there must be some evening classes that you can take. Most colleges offer them even if you're not one of their students. Learning in a class will allow you to pick up the language much more easily since you'll be actively using it whereas when you're self-studying, you're only passively reading and hearing.

QUOTE(Harsky @ Jun 2 2006, 11:11 PM)Chances are, I'm playing it wrong but what it does is some guys appear, and show some kanji and I think you're suppose to write the hirigana of them.... and that's where I'm failing.
The part where Ninjas jump out in front of a warehouse, holding signs with Kanji on them, right? Yeah, you write the Yomigana (i.e., the pronunciation in Hiragana) then hit the red attack button on the right.

I don't think it'll really improve your JP unless you look up every character. It's more of a fun way to test the vocabulary you know when you're preparing for a test like the JLPT. Part of that test requires you to know how to pronounce several forms of Kanji then select the correct Hiragana that represents it.

It's really like a typing game like I mentioned in my earlier post except, you write out characters instead. You'll need to know a fair bit of Japanese Kanji to enjoy this game if you want to avoid looking up the dictionary too much.

hmmm that's weird, it should have reached you (sent again)

As for learning Hiragana (which is what you have to write in to play the game) Make sure to learn stroke order because if you don't write it correctly the right hiragana won't show and yeah... can be frustrating :s.
