I haven't really played Nintendogs. What does download/relay mean in the game?

I read somewhere, that you can download a special item (sunglasses) and a dog for your game.
So its no playable Demo, its just a Download cartridge.

You need 2 DS, 1 Nintendogs game and this Download Relay cartridge.
