Yes and yes.
It uses DLDI to search for the .WAD files which contain the Doom 1&2 data and here's the source:

Here, I recompiled DS Doom to also run from SD Card.

Click on the button next to the Forwarder3-DS title, and click "Update templates" if the app isn't set to update templates at startup.

What's new?

• You can now run ROMs on your SD Card (no Slot-1 flashcard)!

Please note that only homebrew and Download Play demo ROMs will work for now, but as others said, we'll get commercial ROM loading soon.

If you mean the "First Hunt" demo, that won't work, as it reads from Slot-1.

Does it also read subfolders, or just files that are next to the .nds file? In the case of VNDS, it reads files and folders from /vnds/novels/***/***

DS Doom just reads files that are next to it's .nds file.

• dsdoom.nds

• prdoom.wad
• prdoom.cfg

all in one folder.

So the steps for creating the CIA should be:

1. Creating a folder in the 3DS' SD card where all of the DS Doom files will be located (dsdoom.nds, doom.wad, prboom.wad, prboom.cfg, doom2.wad, etc)
2. Drag the dsdoom.nds from the recently created folder into Forwarder3-DS and use the new template to create the new CIA.
3. Install the created CIA into the 3DS.
4. ???
5. Profit.

That's it?

With this thing, I could play NDS ROMs through my DSi's SD Slot using a MicroSD without actually needing a Flashcard, is that what you're saying?!
