Unlike most other cartridge based systems DS roms use a file system of their own. Moreover nearly all roms use the DS sound system which makes hacks fairly simple (a very rare occurence in rom hacking). Many other files like text, graphics and level data also display their own (oft simple) file systems.

There are several tools to extract files namely ndstool
Consult my signature for usage but this is my prefered method of complete extraction.

    Also comes with devkitpro/devkitarm
    NDSTS:
made by the same person that does GBATA:
http://www.gbadat.altervista.org/tools.htm , useful for single file extraction and insertion where length has not changed.
    NDSHV (nds header viewer):
Same principle, vinpires site was shut down but:

Tahaxan, a new app that if it continues is poised to be one of the finest apps around for rom hacking:
    http://tahaxan.arcnor.com/

Of course you can use a hex editor as well with data contained here:

Wow, NDSTS is pretty useful for file browsing [IMG] . I'll give Tahaxan a try when I figure out how it works.

any idea what's up with tahaxan.arcnor.com? all versions of the tool return the same message that the file is being updated and you can't download it.
