I second Streets of Rage and I'd like to add the Ninja Warriors and Battletoads games to the mix.

    Vigilante
    Knights Of The Round
Die Hard Arcade (not sure if this runs in MAME yet)

For Beat Em Ups I'd highly recommend going the console route instead as there's tonnes of them for the MD/SNES.

Does Dynasty Warriors count as a beat-em-up? It's 3D, yeah, but some single battles have higher kill counts than most Stallone/Schwarzenegger films. =P Works off of the same basic principle of BMUs, just there's more mobility and stuff like that. Give it a try!

DW5 or 6, or Warriors Orochi are good I guess.
