Nintendo’s lackluster emulator and some of the mediocre games they offer in this n64 set, makes me feel all the better that I ordered the Steam decK. At least I know retroarch on the Deck will give me the speed and,more importantly, the compatibility that Switch owners can only dream of.

Big N needs to realize that they are much, much better alternatives out there to play these games. And for that they need to really “1Up” their game.

I won’t be renewing my Expansion service as I don’t see them improving beyond this level.

We are spoiled by third party emulation… absolutely spoiled. Nintendo need to up their game.
For real. Let's just see how somethign like Goldeneye runs on this emulator. If that's any better, it would make it the only reason to use this.

Disappointed that the emulator seems kinda low accuracy, but if it lets me play N64 games fullspeed I won't complain too much
I see people complain about accuracy a lot but nobody can ever give an example of the problem caused its just parrots repeating each other

I don't know the root of technical issues, but an example would be OoT specifically. There's something funky with fog and reflection rendering.

So as far as injecting things goes -- Genesis is as easy as NES/SNES.

N64 on the other hand... it will apparently be a community effort. (Reposting here so more people see it.)

Ok... Time to dial in some expectations.

I think booting custom N64 games is possible, but its going to take more work than most would hope. Each game requires a set of files specifically created for the game.

Code:
metapack_temp\*.meta
metapack_temp\*.cfg
metapack_temp\*.nro
metapack_temp\*.spv

Those are the current minimum with my testing, but some may not be required still.

What IS required is game specific hacks like:

JSON:
    "Idle" :
    [
        {
            "JmpAddr": "0x80000810",
            "JmpInst": "0x1000FFFF",
            "IsIdle": "0x1"
        }
    ],

While I may take a shot at creating such hacks... its going to largely be a communal effort. I'm going to focus my efforts on CaVE for the moment, and allowing users to supply such meta packs.

For reference, they are a .cpio archive that's .z compressed. And while the ROM itself isnt required to be compressed (.bnz when .z compressed), the meta info is. There at least seems to be some leeway with the internal naming structure though...

As for good news... Sega Genesis Online boots custom games just fine! No unlock hack needed!

I'll try to focus on getting a CaVE release out so at least Genesis databases can be made. N64 "support" will likely technically be included, but... don't expect to be booting custom games without custom .dtz's.

How it's suppose to look on left vs what $30 online expansion rental service gets you on the right

No fog and no reflections. For $30 bucks I expect top tier quality emulation.

yeah based on my memory alone the right image is incorrect the whole point of that area was Dark Link being your reflection. the fog being gone doesn't bother me as that was typically hardware limitations but no excuse for the reflections.

The problem is that games were designed with those limitations. So unless they improve the draw distance while removing the fog then it would be an improvement. But they didn't do that as this is emulation so it's a poor attempt by Nintendo to not give quality emulation.

    on a second thought, I will stay at Bitbucket even if they decide to scrap the GIT over HTTPS in the upcoming months. All these russian bots sure want to cause damage to dev communities. (like they did to nesdev)
