When I'm holding the console with anything more than a light grip, I'm noticing the right side of the bottom cover plate gets compressed and makes a nasty squeaking noise. I'm not talking about moving very slightly, it can be pressed in quite a bit.

I'm probably just going to pad it on the inside with some paper or something (hopefully the battery doesn't get that too hot), but I'm wondering if this is a common issue?

Only bothered to test it with the Boo and Pikachu plates so far, but same problem on both.

Can't say mine does that with the black plates. Just tried it.
Are the screws screwed in all the way?

Yep. It's just right of the stylus, rather than being all the way to the right. Japanese 8.1 model if it makes any difference.

It does depress a bit, but doesn't creak.

It was a common issue with the old 3DS XL. I had this problem with all 3 of my old 3DS XL.
Nintendo seems to have reinforced the backplate for the new 3DS XL, but you
just have gotten a bad one.

Try open up the backplate and put it back on. If it still squeaks, get a replacement backplate.
