I wouldnt mind giving a reball a go.. like I said I have a decent rework station and under heater that I used to use for the Jtags.. Ps3 reball stencils look pretty pricey though.. i have about 3 PS3 that coukd do with a reball and my old xbox360..

Anyone have any cheap stencils for sale? :D

Reballed thousands of PS3s and best model were mid gen slims. Phats and super slims were the worst.

why was they the worst? do you still do it? reball I mean...

Only reballing PS4 and Xbox one simply because the cost to reball PS3/XB360 outweighs the cost of a working console nowadays.

4 port phats were the best phats, 2 port phats were crap. Super slims I was getting broken 3 months after launch.

I was reffering in terms of consoles yloding and how long reballs lasted. A reballed phat is not better than a non-reballed slim. There's misconception on reballs.

Well then you used shitty solder because my fat is still being used since CFW just came out so many years ago and still going strong after a reball many many years ago. It is not a misconception. Lead doesn't crack as fast due to heating and cooling down while slims don't have lead so the solder cracks much faster due to heating and cooling down. Stop spreading misinformation

That lead free solder is worse than lead solder is more a myth. Michael Meilunas, Anthony Primavera and Steven O. Dunford published a document called " Reliability and Failure Analysis of Lead-Free Solder Joints ". They came to the conclusion that lead free solder( Sn/Ag, Sn/Ag/Cu and Sn/Ag/Cu/Sb) has a greater characteristic lifetime than lead solder (eutectic Sn/Pb).

The source is right here, 15 pages: http://www4.uic.com/wcms/Images.nsf...97cf685256c7200709b8f/$FILE/IPCNewOrleans.pdf

Quote: "The data generated from TG1 and TG2 suggests that all three lead-free alloys have a greater characteristic lifetime compared to eutectic Sn/Pb in 0/100°C temperature cycling. The Sn/Ag alloy showed the highest Eta, which was twice as great as that of Sn/Pb."

Lead free solder cracks more easily due to temperature difference. That is a fact !

Especially read line 7 and 8 of the second link
I'll even copy a piece from that study
'' In addition, lead-free solder joints evaluated in rigorous failure analysis show unique features such as stress voids, crack path redirection around intermetallic formations, vertical cracking and spalling of portions of the solder joint, which are not common in traditional tin-lead BGA solder joints.''
i'm guessing you didn't read your own linked article not 2 well since i am using quotes from that article that state differently ;)

A dogmatic reaction ? Dude i'm even using quotes from your own article that state differently. It is clear you haven't read it. For me to even use quotes from your own article that state differently then you are saying shows that i fucking read it and you didn't.
I can show you more then 10 studies that show lead free solder cracks more easily then solder with lead in it while you only give me one and then i even use quotes from your own article that states what i am saying is correct and yours is false.

And what would be the best trick to avoid the temperature heating? The hole in the box? make a little suspencion (or levitation) to set the ps3? Of course with a fan utility to manage the ps3's fan.
I know the best to avoid it is to not play...But you know, it's made to be played!
thanks for your help and have an happy new year!

There are many things that can be done. Some good are
- Pick a Console with lowest Watt usage as possible (= less heat)
- Sonys thermal paste is known to be bad, better replace them with proper one.
- Always keep fans and cooling fins clean(ofc :D )
- Make sure there is enough room around the console for airflow
- Remove the Heatspreader from Cell and RSX and renew thermal paste under that too (difficult)

At Phats its also possible to drill holes into the plastic case right under the fan, so its suck air from the bottom, some suspencions would be great here indeed.
For version CECHG04 its possible to remove plastic case borders to get a better airflow. I tested this method and it works great for me, the G04 is 10-15°C cooler then before.

thank you Traace! I have never be taken in those problems because until this year, I had only nintendo consoles which are best for watt usage...But with my ps3 slim and all these "bad cooling system", I'm a little bit afraid. So I will do what I can with it, but I don't feel enough smart to replace the sony's thermal paste. thanks

You might try to reflow but it probably wouldn't last long. You might try this for reball.

https://www.consolewizard.co.uk/ps3-original-repairs/playstation-3-ps3-reball-bga-rework-repair.html
Not sure how these reballing services stay in business when you can just buy a used, working PS3 for about the same price. It's kind of like a service saying that we can fix your burnt out I7 processor for $400, when you can just buy another identical processor for the same price??

I actually really enjoy trying to fix things.. I think I will have a go at reballing it myself.. if all goes well have 2 more PS3's that also need doing.
I just need to buy the stencils.. and we are good.. China here we come.. :)
