My idea for a revolutionary new console.

A super compact console with ports for the different ways it can be used. It's basically three different product categories in one, one of them being completely new.

You buy the console, and use it in one of three different ways.
a) as a console
b) as a PC
c) as a handheld

So imagine that Sam buys it for a, Jesse buys it for b, and Gary buys it for c, but they are all purchasing the exact same product, and having access to the same library of games.

And because it's three different product categories, it's basically a console that cannot fail. (or, at least, is at least three times less likely to fail) This is because it's like simultaneously releasing three consoles. It's even better, in fact, because all three consoles are not only the same platform, they are literally the same product. Rather than cannibalizing each other, they're strengthening each other.

And since the console won't come with a controller, it can be sold for stupid cheap. (but it could come in different SKUs, for example a TV SKU that comes with controller, or a handheld SKU that comes with the handheld component)

The problem with this approach is that decent spec'd hardware either weighs a ton or costs a grillion dollars, and the battery in portable mode would last all of 5 minutes.

Consoles can now be used on tablets and the ps4 can be used on vita so it is going this way. It is a great idea (Nintendo sort of do the handheld and console side with the gamepad).

All 3 in 1 would save space and if it could be used as a PC it will have higher specs and maybe upgradeable

With the NX coming up I thought I'd mention a modification to my idea:

1) The idea of a "handheld kit" is kind of stupid. Instead, the console would have an optional gamepad (like Wii U) which would have a screen and all games would have off-TV play. (Maybe this is what Nintendo has in mind, as a way to keep the WiiU relevant. Meaning you'd just be able to use the Wii U gamepad as a controller for the NX, kinda like how you can use the wiimote on a Wii U) That or just sell it as a handheld, since that's still probably simpler than having a handheld add-on that you need to the insert the console into.

2) You can own multiple of the same console. Buy one for the TV, and buy a second console for your PC. You would be able to have the same account on both. Whenever you download a game, it downloads to both consoles. Your consoles would communicate with each other, and sync content and save files. You can play on the TV, stop playing, switch to the PC, and immediately begin playing where you left off.

It's nice that you'd buy it since it already exists - it's called a WikiPad. Runs Android, it's a tablet, it has a controller dock exactly as you described and an HDMI Out and USB host for a monitor and a keyboard. It's compatible with Bluetooth controllers, too!

Of course nobody did - first Nintendo has to make a shitty implementation of something like this, pretend it's innovation, then Sony and Microsoft have to pick it up, make it actually work and then it'll be standardized... and everyone will be sick of it. ;O;
