hi tempers! my friend gave me his og xbox to fix it. The damn thing is stuck updating. Can I tsop it and use slayers to fix it? or is it a goner? I'm quite sure its not a 1.6 xbox

If it doesn't load to the dash or if it spews out an error then no, you'll need dash access to TSOP it.

What happens if you put a retail disc in the tray?
Does it boot to the game?
Was it previously softmodded?

yea i previously did with the splinter cell exploit. Ill try a dvd in the tray forgot about that

A modchip isn't the only solution he could also read his eeprom and make a new hdd.

Try booting it via the Eject button, see if it boots up in the softmod menu.

If you can temporarily transplant the chip over then yeh.
Solder some wires and you're good to go.
Keep in might that it might need an LPC rebuilt.

Tho that's risky but you could try it.
Hopefully you've backed up the C drive.

Better to say it before hand then having to explain afterwards.

Hotswap you do with a PC.
You basically quickly swap the IDE cable from the Xbox to HDD to HDD -> PC.
That way it is possible to read the drive contents.
But idk if your drive is unlocked at the point of it being stuck or not.

now how do i softmod without a memory card? I plan on tsoping as well as upgrading the hdd

You can't softmod without a usb stick or memory card.
