It's using an ancient way to boot cfw (Menuhax 9.2 + Luma RedNand) and yesterday it just stopped working. When I turn it on, after a couple of seconds it makes a popping noise and turns off. The popping noise sounds like the type when you plug headphones in a headphone jack. Can anyone help?

Also sometimes it makes a rattling noise when you shake it

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

However it still worked when we found out about it. You just had to rattle it enough so that the rattle goes away

If it was a 3ds I would say the ribbon cable to the top screen was torn - but not sure what shorted here.

Did he drop it or anything preceding this?

My 2DS was doing something very similar. I would press the power button and the power light would come on for about a second then it would go off. I did not get a speaker pop. Charging did not help. Today I decided to try popping out the SD card and turning it on. To my surprise it turned on to the Luma config menu. So I turned the 2DS off and popped the SD card back in. Put the 2DS back on and it's now working like normal.
