The edges of the Tempy mascot in your avatar are sharp and jagged and rough. After you cut out Tempy and paste him in a new layer, while it's still selected, go to Select - Modify - Border..., set it to, say 4 pixels. It will select an outline of the object (Tempy) 4 pixels wide. Now apply Gaussian blur to the new selection. You'll get blurred edges instead of the sharp noticeable edges.
