Hey there,

my New 3DS XL does not like to be used, i can only use it when the Battery and Powerbrick is both plugged in. I ordered and replaced the PWB in hopes mine was faulty but its still the same outcome. I dont get any sign of Life when i plug in just the battery and try to turn it on, i get one if just the Power is connected by the Orange Charging LED, That just goes away after 3-4 seconds and i cant turn it on. I use a new Battery but i also have the original (slightly bloated) battery and a 2DS battery. Everything is charged snd nothing works when i just want to draw power from the battery.

Can anybody please help me what the issue is here? I cant see anyone else encounter this problem and i really want to get it fixed!

Given that your 3DS works if both the battery and the external power is connected, it's unlikely to be a 3DS issue (not impossible, but less likely). For one, the 3DS won't turn on without a battery. I have a broken / bloated battery here that I've had to remove from a 3DS and at the moment, that 3DS is a paperweight.

When you plug the 3DS in with the "new" battery, does it show charging at all? Have you tested the voltage of the battery to make sure it's good? A fully charged 3.7v Li-On battery should clock in at around 4.2v.

If you turn your 3DS on (with battery and power) and bring up Rosalina menu (L+Down+Select), it should display battery voltage and charge % on the bottom. Check that and let us know. You can leave it on this screen for a while (lid open) and see if the charge goes up too.

If it doesn't go up, then there's a chance something is wrong with the charging circuit on the 3DS. Is that fixable...? I don't know. I can only assume so, but it's beyond my knowledge.

Also, what happens if it's on with battery and power and you unplug the power, does it turn off immediately?

Yes, once booted In it shows as "charging". My Battery is not fully charged but it is 3.7 V. I couldnt mod it before, i can today and i will Check that later. I dort think its the Circuit but we'll see. After unplugging eiter the power brick or battery It shuts down immediately

Like I said, the 3DS can't operate without a battery. Unplugging the battery on any 3DS will kill the power immediately.

3.7v isn't drastically low and the 3DS should operate at that voltage, but if the battery is old (or just cheap), it might show a reasonable voltage until put under load, then that voltage can drop pretty quickly to the point nothing works.

And just because it shows as charging, is it really actually charging the battery? If you leave it for a while and check the voltage, does it increase? 30-40 minutes on charge should be enough to go from 3.7v -> ~4v.

The 2DS battery won't help, it's a different size. I have never opened my New 2DS XL to confirm the battery size on that one. Too many screws to stuff around with.

It does sound like the battery is the issue though. Do you know of anyone you can test swap the battery with?

I tried charging the new battery for a while but it doesnt change the Voltage sadly. The 3DS still powers on if i told the 2ds battery down (just to check if it works) i also have the original slightly bloated battery from this DS that still works. I dont have anyone i could try to a swap with. And shouldnt the 3DS still operate even if its just connected to the power? I heard it should work. Im currently trying to mod the 3DS and then try to look at the percentage

Okay so i modded the 3DS ande checked the battery. The 3DS actually drains the Battery, after about 15-20 Minutes it went down by 1.5%. I maybe need to look somewhere for someone who owns a 3DS and maybe mind boworing me their Charger to test if mine is maybe faulty but that doesnt explain why my 3DS doesnt want to work without it.

I found this old thread you might want to read up on.

Sounds like a hardware fault on your 3DS. That thread indicates the teeny tiny little inductor may be to blame.
If you're not 100% confident in fixing this, I'd find someone who is.

Is there a way to make sure its that what causes the problem?
Yeah, open your 3DS and measure the inductor.

What are the correct measurements? No idea. That thread had more information and suggested the voltage bounced around. Voltage should be stable coming out of the inductor.
