I own an R4 and due to the recent shortage am looking into buying a DS TT for a friend of mine. I would like to know, however, how the multi-card play works between players. Testimonials on the DS TT would be nice despite this not being the place for it, but really I'd just like to know if this sort of thing is possible. Once the game is loaded and working fine, does the type of flash card not matter when it comes to multi card play?

In my household we currently have R4s and a DSTT and an M3 Real - and they've all worked fine together for multi-card play with anything I've thrown at them. That should hold true for pretty much any current card.

There shouldn't be any problems in multiplayer whatsoever... I don't actually own a DSTT (It's on my SCDS1), but that's what I heard.

If I was you I'd keep the dstt and give the r4 to your friend.

If you want a better card get the SCDS1 its around the price of the dstt at most sites.

EDIT: On the topic multi-card play will work.
