Hurray! I'll start translating the opening,the skills and the battle menu *hopefully* The compression I was talking about was LZ77 after all and the only thing I need to start hacking is a LZ77 packer.
Try this one: http://www.romhacking.net/utils/511/
I did! I did! Thanks DarthNemesis!
Edit:Good news,I started translating the battle menu!
Here is a sceenshot.It's not quite readable yet but I will fix it.

With the program that was posted just now, I can finally read the opening.
But no matter where I look, I still can't find some certain things: Story script, normal techniques, etc.
Noitora, sorry to ask a stupid question, but can you tell me what the files in each folder are for?
All I figured out is that the important stuff is in sys, super techniques are in battle/sp, shop names are in cf/shopdata.pk, and tutorials are in cf/tuto. Everything else I open comes out with gibberish, even with the decompressor.

And we should probably coordinate ourselves so we don't end up doing the same thing.
Here's my progress so far:
-translated pc.bin in the sys folder, now player character names appear in battle
-translated some boss names in en.bin
-translated half the stuff in the battle/sp folder

I can't even figure out that battle menu. I assume it's in battle/sys/bmenu.pk, but when I open it up(regularly and after decompression) I don't get anything coherent.

Oh well, I'll leave it up to you.
Have you done anything with the opening yet? I think I'll try getting that to work.

I know this may have nothing to do with this game but which program did you use to rip the information to a spreadsheet and will it work with most games, as I have been looking into Hercules no eikou translation and I think this method may speed up my progress somewhat alos I need a good useful graphic program to make the menu options english as well.

Cheers

Any help is gladly accepted

There is a variety of programs to use but I tend to use Tile molester.You can also use tiled2002 or crystaltile, just Google for them and you'll find them.
Edit:just finished the battle menu, it looks sweet!

I'm almost done with special skills. I also fixed up spirit commands which were mistranslated.
I'll upload everything I've done to rapidshare after I test them.

Edit: http://rapidshare.com/files/128036362/mugen.zip.html UPDATED
Included in this:
-Names and descriptions for all player special skills
-player character names
-most boss names (UPDATED: all enemy names, although I'm not sure if they're right)
-retranslated spirit commands
-a save file, I noticed your screenshot is from the beginning of the game. So I added this so you can test things at the end. First slot is a save before the final dungeon, second slot is new game+

I assume you know where everything goes.

Edit: Have you started any work on the passive skills yet? I think I can do those.
In the mean time, I'll work on enemy names.

BTW, does anyone know what this word is, the romaji is "Ainsuto"
It's in the names of every imitation boss. I can't figure it out. I think it might be german. Einst? Anyone here know german?

Einst, yea, it's used in the OG games as a title for certain alien units.
So...
Einst [Name] for example.

Thanks. I haven't played the OG games yet. I want to, but I can't get over the lower graphic and sound quality after having played W. If only Atlus would translate the PS2 version...

There's another name I'm not sure about. Because of his position as a character/mech, it's not on the official site.
The romaji is Varushain Rihikaito. I think it's Valshine Lichtkait, but I just want to make sure.

Need some more help with enemy names, some of them are really stupid. I have to admit, I'm guessing with some of them. If I need any more help, I'll edit this post so I don't end up spamming the thread.

I'm confused with this one: toreifuru sorujya.
My dictionary comes up with trayful soldier, which doesn't make sense. Enemy names surrounding this one are: Pick soldier, Callow Soldier, and Cool Soldier. If I remember correctly, these enemies had card symbols(heart, diamond, spade, club). I don't even get what they have to do with cards. Can anyone figure it out?

Need a biology expert for this one: Vararesu.
Two names before this one was Heartless, then after that was Cerebrumless. By that logic, this should be some sort of organ-less.

Edit: GAH! There's so many names I don't get and I'm only 1/3 of the way through the file. A lot of them aren't english (or japanese), some take names from random mythology. Screw it! Any names I don't know will be completely guessed or sounded out. When a patch with the names come out, someone can go through the game and send me a list of what I got wrong.

During one dungeon there's a group of monsters that are literally playing cards.
I'd go with a bit of leeway on the naming there and name them Heart Soldier, Diamond Soldier, and so on.

Vararesu...Varaless...Valaless...man, I have no idea...I don't think I'm far in enough to even guess at it.

Can anyone figure it out?They're the French words for each of the suits.
Spade = pique
Heart = cœur
Diamond = carreau
Club = trèfle

Post the list here or on a wiki (not romanized) and see if people can figure it out.
