Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima explained a bit more about the upcoming Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance via Twitter, including its transformation and mechanics.

Metal Gear Rising originally started as Metal Gear Solid: Rising and was in development by Kojima Productions. A few trailers and demos of the game were shown years ago, running at 30FPS with the typical environments of a Metal Gear game. When the game shifted hands to Bayonetta developer Platinum Games, Kojima told them to make it run at 60FPS. It also features a new atmosphere and color palette.

Platinum Games also made quite a few changes to the game. Metal Gear Solid: Rising was originally a prequel to Metal Gear Solid 4, following Raiden's transformation into a cyborg ninja. The new story follows Raiden post-Metal Gear Solid 4 as he's sent to a developing country in the midst of a civil war. However, he unknowingly hast to face an army of cyborg ninjas like himself. The original title also featured a mix of stealth and action. When the game came over to Platinum Games, it was changed to be a Metal Gear Solid 4 sequel about Raiden and the stealth was dropped completely for a total action.

One key mechanic in the original version of Metal Gear Rising was a cutting mechanic that allowed protagonist/cyborg ninja Raiden to cut almost anything, from the environments to enemies to even fruit. While the newer version is a lot faster paced and it could easily be assumed that this mechanic was cut out (pun intended), Kojima has assured that you'll still be able to cut anything. This new version will let you cut up enemies and objects anywhere in real time.

As per the name change, Kojima explained that the new title was for a new protagonist. While Metal Gear Solid (exception being Metal Gear Solid 2) focused either around Solid Snake or his genetically identical predecessor Big Boss (aka Naked Snake), Metal Gear Rising focuses on Metal Gear Solid 2 protagonist Raiden. The new title hopes to distance the game from a typically Snake-dominated series and avoid it being put down as a "Metal Gear Solid spin off".

That game looks awful. The new trailer is among the worst I've seen ever.
Raiden is THROWING the Metal Gear from MGS4. In the air. With his bare hands. It is fucking ridiculous.

    That's kinda why it's awesome.

Also, vampires that can run on water and run up walls is fine but throwing giant robots is just too far!

Looks like it's officially not a MGS game anymore. Stealth has been one of the greatest things about the series (since the original Metal Gear games)! This shit's gonna play like Bayonetta/DMC and have copious amounts of fanservice, and it's gonna sell well. On the other hand, I will be thoroughly disappointed.

It's awful because it undermines everything that is Metal Gear. How dangerous can the Metal Gear really be if you can slice it with a sword after you've thrown it up in the air.
They are fucking their IP up, kinda like Square Enix has been doing with Final Fantasy. It annoys me like hell, used to be my two favorite game series.

Grey Fox defeated a Metal Gear with nothing but a sword. Where in the rulebook does it say that another cyborg ninja can't?

Oh yeah, and that time that Raiden took on 25 Metal Gears? Before he was a cyborg ninja? You kill like 3-5 of them or something before Solidus stops it.

Crying about Raiden doing something ridiculous seems really contradictory in a series full of ridiculous situations and characters.

It's not, that's why they changed the name to Metal Gear Rising instead of Metal Gear Solid: Rising.

Vamp has been in MGS2 and MGS4. They've also had oodles of weirdo shit in the series.

General rule of thumb for MGS is "When in doubt, stop doubting because it's nanomachines".

Theoretically you can have anything happen in Metal Gear Solid as long as you say "Oh, nanomachines did that" at the end. Fills any plot hole.

Really? Because when I saw that, I thought, damn, Raiden's badass.

You people are just mad because you expected another slow paced game, when clearly the first trailer said " Lightning Bolt Action".

Honestly, does it really matter how he took out the metal gear? Does the game really look bad?

IDK, I think it looks amazing for its genre, Way better than DMC IMO.

vamp running on water and up walls was also explained in mgs4. surprisingly it wasn't nanomachines, although van der Waals force is probably not that much different as a dues ex machina. the frog gals do the same thing

also, platinum games has done more than just bayonetta. Vanquished was my favorite game this year, so i'm super excited.

Have people played any other Platinum game other than Bayonetta?
Madworld? Vanquish? That DS game that's probably good?

PG are cool, one of the best Japanese developers. Plus most of them are from Clover Studio.. There's no reason to doubt Rising knowing them.

Infinite Space was actually pretty shit. Really slow, really boring, and it felt very unpolished. Everything else is fine but Infinite Space was rather shit.

But yeah, if it wasn't for Platinum Games I probably wouldn't be nearly as interested.

Even though we got a new trailer, I still want to see more gameplay from this game. I am not sure if this is going flop or be a great title.
