a full large scale ddos is almost impossible to trace.
it's usually a whole army of computers that are infected by a virus that makes them send a large amount of data to an IP address when the creator/owner of that virus requests it.
to trace the one who ordered the ddos you first need to get a sample of the virus off one of the infected computers(very difficult)
then you have to reverse-engineer(atleast as difficult) it to capture it's way of contacting it's owner/creator.
after that you need to actually trace the IP the owner/creator uses to access that way of contacting(usually it's through an irc channel)
after that you can get as close as pinpoint the city the attacker is located in, but even then you have to hope his ISP will support you.
and at best case it most likely ends with the attacker's internet being cut-off for a while.
