Monster Hunter Outlanders announced as a new “fully-fledged open-world” mobile title

Originally launching on the PS2 in 2004 and since exploding in popularity in Japan with the portable PSP releases, and globally with the release of World, Monster Hunter stands as a one of Capcom’s best-selling series. With much anticipation for the latest entry, Monster Hunter Wilds, launching early next year, fans have been somewhat blindsided by the unceremonious reveal of an entirely new and different title. And it’s a mobile game.

Monster Hunter isn’t new to mobile games, with the Pokemon Go-style Monster Hunter Now having seen more than 15 million downloads since it launched last year. Outlanders is something of a different beast however, promising to be a “traditional hunting experience” available on your phone. In the press release we’ve had an open world map confirmed, as well as gear and tool crafting, and up to four-player multiplayer. Also released was a short trailer showing ways to move around the world, with a paraglider, the now-staple of the open world genre, prominently featured. It should be noted that no combat was shown.

The game is to be developed by Capcom themselves alongside TiMi Studio Group, known for their work on Age of Empires Mobile, Call of Duty Mobile, and Pokemon Unite. Though no launch date has been stated, it has been confirmed that there will be a number of play tests prior to the game releasing. A Discord server has been setup to host discussions for the title, as well as share opportunities to sign up to the aforementioned play testing sessions.

I don't want to make a new thread every minor update, but because I am personally interested in it I wanted a place to post things as they come up, so I'll just use this thread and threadmarks to put in any new info as it appears. I'll probably make a separate thread for play tests or a release date, but that's about it.

First update is an introduction to the game by its producers! Looks like we'll get a number of dev diaries going forwards.

Did I miss something where they suggested there's a gacha system for characters? Cause people on YouTube are freaking the hell out.

I don't think it's been explicitly said, but the producers video posted above talks about unique characters with origin stories and stuff, which does seem to be setting up for it. What's interesting to me is that if they didn't go with an open world format, they'd already have a really well suited format for that kind of free to play mobile game. You'd just need to put a stamina bar on going for hunts, and your monster carves are already a gacha system in themselves lol

But yeah early days yet. They do emphasise the equipment crafting again, so it's my hope that even if unique characters are gacha, that they'll just have one or two unique moves (similar to switch skills in Rise) with a given weapon type. Something like that.

Hopefully they include the normal crafting , which it sounds like they are so far. Generally I don't care too much about my character's appearance except for the last Switch titles with the transmogrification options.

Ideally they'll sell us tickets that replace a material and skip cooldown on crafting and cosmetic stuff, but no major P2W stuff or locked loadouts on gacha characters.
