Monster Hunter Outlanders announced as a new “fully-fledged open-world” mobile title

KVwithlogo.jpg

Originally launching on the PS2 in 2004 and since exploding in popularity in Japan with the portable PSP releases, and globally with the release of World, Monster Hunter stands as a one of Capcom’s best-selling series. With much anticipation for the latest entry, Monster Hunter Wilds, launching early next year, fans have been somewhat blindsided by the unceremonious reveal of an entirely new and different title. And it’s a mobile game.

Monster Hunter isn’t new to mobile games, with the Pokemon Go-style Monster Hunter Now having seen more than 15 million downloads since it launched last year. Outlanders is something of a different beast however, promising to be a “traditional hunting experience” available on your phone. In the press release we’ve had an open world map confirmed, as well as gear and tool crafting, and up to four-player multiplayer. Also released was a short trailer showing ways to move around the world, with a paraglider, the now-staple of the open world genre, prominently featured. It should be noted that no combat was shown.

The game is to be developed by Capcom themselves alongside TiMi Studio Group, known for their work on Age of Empires Mobile, Call of Duty Mobile, and Pokemon Unite. Though no launch date has been stated, it has been confirmed that there will be a number of play tests prior to the game releasing. A Discord server has been setup to host discussions for the title, as well as share opportunities to sign up to the aforementioned play testing sessions.

Beyond the scope of the main post, I'm cautiously optimistic on this one. As an amusing side note, this isn't actually Capcom's first "fully-fledged" mobile Monster Hunter game, with a port of Freedom Unite having been made for iOS way back when. It was never updated when Apple killed support for 32 bit games sadly, but it was a really solid port.

Hoping to be a part of the play tests to find out if it'll actually manage to be a game worth playing.

Capcom has made a partnership with Timi Studio, which is owned by Tencent, I'm not surprised they made it with a Chinese company, but at least it's not Netease.

But I'm not fully hyped for it, because knowing all of the other Timi/Tencent games, it may be turned into a cash-grab heavily monetized gacha in 2 or 3 years.

Still, I'm curious to see it

Meh. Touch control for this type of game is kinda lame.

Still impressive to see how powerfull our handheld computers have become. 12yo me would be in heaven.

God, this is the very first trailer and it had 0 felynes... This is no goodView attachment 471067
There's barely any felynes in MH3U and that's still my favorite in the series, but I agree that felynes would've made more sense since they're almost the series' mascot alongside rathalos. I think if they really go for the "traditional" approach this could be a decent game, but only time will tell.

There's too much Monster Hunter coming out too fast. I'm never getting into the series.
None of the games are connected, in fact they barely have any story, it's all about the gameplay. If you wanna get into the main series just ignore all the spinoffs (except maybe Generations Ultimate and Sunbreak, those are really good) and focus on Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, MH3U, MH4U, Iceborne and Wilds when it launches. But again, none of the games have any connection between them aside from maybe one or two recurring characters every now and then and mentions of locations and monsters from past games, so just pick whichever you can get and try it.

Okay. Capcom? When certain people - World newcomers included - were demanding "open-world Monster Hunter games"...I don't think this is what they meant.

This is basically a yearly franchise.View attachment 471077
It's actually closer to 3-4 years between main titles. That list can be skimmed down to:
  • Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate (2011)
  • Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (2014)
  • Monster Hunter XX (2017) - [not quite a main series game, which might explain its close timing to World]
  • Monster Hunter World (2018)
  • Monster Hunter Rise (2021)
  • Monster Hunter Wilds (2025)
Historically there would be two releases for each game, one that serves as a new game in general, then one to serve as an expansion with the hardest difficulty added onto to the endgame. That trend is something that only Japan really had to put up with, since western releases typically only included the "Ultimate" versions. The exception to that is Monster Hunter Generations, no idea why.

Nowadays they've kinda dropped that format in favour of a game-sized DLC release (Iceborne + Sunbreak) around a year after launch. Amusingly this is a net loss for buyers since it means they're locked into paying for both the base game and DLC, instead of just having the option to wait to pick up a definitive version down the line.

In the time between releases Capcom are typically decent at releasing additional DLC quests for the games too, which does give you some challenging content to attempt if you have seen all there is to do. I really enjoy the series, and you get plenty of time between new releases to actually get things done (the last game Rise launched in 2021). But either way, no game is for everybody. If you don't think it's for you that's fine too.

Fair shout there! I always forget about the PSP games, and Tri -> 3U feels like such a leap compared to the others that I tend to view them differently, but you are right.

In the case of Generations, it was a celebration title for the series up to that point, so they likely released the base version in the West to capitalize on that while the celebration aspect was still good (and possibly make up for Portable 3rd never releasing outside of Japan, for those who preferred the games made by the Portable team). Would've got GenU about a year after the 3DS release of XX (and probably would've got a 3DS release of GenU, too), but Capcom decided to delay it likely so as not to clash with the global release of World, so GenU ended up releasing exclusively on Switch a year after the Switch release of XX. (Which, funny enough, marked the third - and very likely last - time in the West that the base version and Ultimate version of a MonHun game released on different systems; first time was arguably Monster Hunter > Monster Hunter Freedom, due to G never releasing overseas).
