    i currently have a 4:3 17" lcd monitor with a res of 1024x768.
this res is supported in the xbox360 device options.

i want to buy a bigger montior 22" with a res of 1680x1050.
how does the x360 match this res? does it scale up a 720 or scale down a 1080?
would the output be stretched in any way?

Depends on your monitor. My 22" SyncMaster 216BW can scale down the 1080p resolution. I hear that some older monitors won't take the 1080p signal.

Hmmm the list of resolutions offered in the setting screen depend on how you connect the box to the LCD.

I use a samsung 20" lcd and either connect it via VGA cable or HDMi to DVD-d. Both ways the xbox offers me the LCD's native resolution of 1680x1050 which is what I use.

Because the screen is 16:10 and not 16:9 aspect, the xbox compensates with small black bars at the top & bottom of the screen. These bars are displayed because the xbox's aspect is 16:9 (made for a TV not a PC monitor)

AFAIK there is no stretching at this resolution. Just these bars top & bottom.

    It's 16:10.

I use a 19" WS LCD at 1440x700. I have the small bars top and bottom, but the advantage of much higher IQ and textures than before NXE far outweighs it.

The games are upscaled and blurry. They may have the correct aspect ratio, but they are still stretched.

this sounds like either a monitor setting problem or possibly that you haven't put up the res in the x360 options.

just to be on the safe side i may just take my 360 down to the shop and acutally hook it up and check it
(or buy the monitor and return it if it's not nice.)

Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4, as well as most games, are simply upscaled on a display with a resolution higher than 720p. It's like when you take a picture and stretch it.

Games look fine on my 24" BenQ G2400W (using the VGA cable). It has a native resolution of 1920x1200, and the 360 unfortunately stretches 1920x1080, so I run with 1680x1050 and live with the slight letterboxing.

found this on ign x360 news:

"New display support: Because you asked for it, we are adding 16X10 over VGA or HDMI, and support for 1440x900 or 1680x1050."

    FOLLOW UP.

got the acer p223wbd widescreen 22" monitor. when i pluged it in and turned on the X[]O, the native resolution option of 1680x1050 came up automatically.
there is no streatching and the crystalbright glossy finish makes it look awesome. there are two black bars at the top and bottom of the screen cuz mnitors are typically 16:10 while the x[]O output is 16:9.
