the machine itself (slim) is NTSC, however when i purchased it it was already modded, and was able to play Pal games perfectly. However, recently all Pal games have turned black and white, while ntsc games stilled worked completely fine (both real and backup),

i was wondering if there was a way i could fix this? if more info on the modchip is needed, can someone redirect me to info that can teach me how to find out what mod chip is in my console?

    thanks!

If he said it worked before finely and was only recent, I can't see how getting anything extra will help.

I'm going to take a guess and say...
Is there any way to manually change the video format of your TV? From NTSC to PAL?
Check if the PS2 settings contain a option to choose between RGB and Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr. If so, choose RGB (doubt that'll do anything as it mostly affects whether you can use progressive scan and if you want a green screen on SCART cables, still worth a try).
Jiggle about with the video wire and see if helps.

Like I said, it's only a guess so they may not help.

Have you changed your tv recently?

hi, no it's still the same tv so i don't understand why wouldn't it work, and it was modded so i could play pal games fine.

it's more like, do you guys know which part of the chip is responsible for the region stuff, and if there's anyway i can open up my ps2 and fix it myself?

There is no specific part of the chip that deals with imports , if it's booting the games fine , then the install is fine , so no need to open it. Most of the newer chips have a config menu you can access , which contains stuff like forcing certain video outputs (pal , ntsc) and various other options. If it was fine before and none of the equipment has been changed , then I'd guess something has been changed in the config. You never said what chip you have , so just gonna have to throw out the config access for the ones I know.

Matrix infinity = Circle + Triangle on startup.
DMS4 = Sqaure on start up
Crystal chip = I think boots to a menu anyway.

Be warned though , if you have a clone of a matrix infinity , then accessing the menu may kill the chip.

on start up, do you mean when the thing is spinning around before the official menu loads up? (ie. when there's no disc inside).

also, if i open up the console, would it be easy to tell which mod chip i have? (i have been looking for pictures of different mod chips but haven't been sucessful.)
    cheers guys

I mean as soon as you switch on it , turn it on and press button combo straight away. Although it's only a guess ,you could have a older chip that doesn't have a config but as it's a slim ps2 I would of though it would have a newer chip.

Also yes it's easy to tell what it is by opening it and looking , but I just remembered if it's a matrix infinity or clone , then there will be a little infinity X.XX under the playstation 2 logo on game boot. Not sure if the others have any sort of logo. If it is a matrix , then I'd be wary of accessing the menu without seeing the chip first though , as it could be a clone , which may die if you access the menu.
