I bought a PS2 slim from fb marketplace, it has the matrix modchip installed. It will play CDs fine (PS1) but it won't play DVDs (PS2 titles). What could be the solution to this? Should I install a new laser drive? I've had another PS2 slim that had a bad laser reader also. Sony made them so bad quality.

I would first try a good cleaning of the laser. If that doesn't help, try adjusting the potentiometers. If that doesn't help, a new laser is probably your final option. But I don't know why anyone would buy a chipped PS2 when FMCB and FreeDVDBoot exist.

Definitely also install a laser fix if your model is a V12 PS2 slim.

A chipped PS2 is great for booting burnt PS1 games, but its more a safer bet to MechaPwn.

Well there are two reasons why I want a ps2 with a hard chip.
1) You can play PS1 backups
2) You have optical audio out
