I have a Xbox that I haven't played in a while and I want to mod it so that I can play some burned games.

I noticed that there are some very cheap modchips ($10-$20) and some very expensive ones($50-$90). Can anyone recommend me a mod chip to buy? I want it to be easy to install as I only have some soldering experience from high school engineering class.

I heard solderless solutions are not reliable, is this true?

I always buy the Xecuter3 chips, they are very stable and work great, easy to flash.
But almost any will work, but i have never has an X3 die on me. I just use my xbox as a media center since i have a 360 now

I suggest softmodding your xbox its faster, easyier and does not void your warrenty. All you need is a copy of splinter cell, mech assult or agent under fire and a xbox memory card and a friend with a modded xbox.

Softmodding is a lot easier. I recommend using splinter cell as both the original and classic versions work. You can pick them up now for next to nothing. Same goes for the memory card. The only problem with softmodding is if you want to fit a harddrive its a little more hastle. You have to find a harddrive that locks and then use your PC to lock it. You also need a way to get the softmod tools on the memory card. I recommend Krazies ndure softmod tools.

Thanks for the help guys. I soft-modded the xbox and now I have UnleashX dashboard.

Is there a guide that can show me what modded Xbox can do? It seems like it can do a lot more than just play burned games.

Check out my old UnleashX site it has a couple skins on it.

    http://unleashdomainx.googlepages.com/

A soft modded xbox can do pretty much everything a Hard Mod can do.

What version of UnleashX is included in the Krayzie Ndure installer 1.1?

Is there any newer version? If so, should I upgrade?

For some reason the Live Update wouldn't work so I updated manually to 0.39 0528A.

Ok I've got everything working. Now is there a tutorial on how to switch hard drive to a bigger one? I want to copy all my games onto it.

Install the latest version of Avalaunch as the dash...

Then get the latest XBMC with MC360 skin [IMG]

and finally stick the big-ass-emulator disc on the hdd.

    Result = Awesome machine. [IMG]

I have that setup with a 1tib freenas serving all my vids & misc round the house. Gonna get a couple more xbox's for the other rooms & my "eHome" will be ace!

No matter what anybody says, you don't need a modchip to use XboxHDM to upgrade your HDD

I've installed quite a few bigger hard drives using the method shown in the link, and they're very easy to install.

Heres another tutorial for fitting a bigger harddrive. This is the one I used

    http://www.techfreaks.org/articles/modxbox2.shtml

XBMC is the best media centre ever. I rarely play games on my xbox now buy use XBMC to stream xvid and divx movies. It will also play your DVDs. Also check out some of the emulators on the xbox as it has a good amiga, megadrive, SNES, N64 and plenty more.

Slayers is a collection of useful tools like XBMC. It can partition the drive for you if your using a modchip. It can also unlock your harddrive (Not recommended for a softmod unless you have the eeprom key. It also has emulators on it and a few other things. Unless you know what your doing I'd keep well away from it as you could ruin your softmodded xbox.
