I have found someone who is skilled at soldering, but I'm not sure if the current solutions are the best. Do you think it is a good idea to purchase now or wait until something better comes out?

Have them do a wire install with the wiikey - that way you can always replace it easily later on in case something better comes along.

There will eventually probably be real modchips that will let us do really cool things with the wii. Who knows when and how bad you need to play imports.

Wait if you have some good games, maybe later on we will see truely region free chip, and maybe other features as well.

Id do a wire install of a wiikey so you get the best of what is available now. As for modchips down the line, unless they have some huge feature other than letting you play burned games I dont think I will buy one. My wiikey plays my games fine for me, even my NTSC-J games on my NTSC-U Wii. (note: I did have to patch 1 iso file though because of DRE but I think it was a burn problem and I just jumped to conclusions and patched)

So like said many times before:

    "WiiKey Now!"

buy a wiikey if you want. Don't moan when you get a clone or half your GC backups dont work. [IMG]

It just depends on what you want the mod chip to do. If you want to play copied VC games, have full PAL/NTSC compatability and run wii homebrew wait for a proper mod chip. If you just want to play copies and some PAL/NTSC games get the wiikey. Maybe they will get it in the future so all PAL/NTSC games will work and make the wii truely region free.

The day it can play copied VC games is the day I open my Wii again [IMG] Until then it stays closed (it works and I dont want to break it)

Current modchips can run discs with nes and snes emulator on them and the entire rom library. So in that regard some "VC" type functionality is already available with more support expected in the near future (Sega,C64, and etc).

As for a truly region free chip, the Wiikey offers firmware updates to handle this. Otherwise you would have to wait till the end of the Wii's run cycle for a mod chip that could play every single Wii game ever conceived with no problems. The only alternative is buy something that can be updated.

The biggest concern I have it on line play and the risk of being banned. however since the wiikey is a drive chip and does not affect the system's firmware, I don't see how Nintendo can ever know unless they start forcing people to register online copies.

I know this. I was on about them running emulators using the actual wii and not the gamecube.

    VC stand for Virtual Console.
It's the emulator on the Wii, you can play games that have been released in the past.
NES games, SNES Games, N64 Games, and some more.
    But I'm no Pro [IMG].
