I think that the best way to reduce spam is to make it so where a mod must approve a post until the user has say 10 posts or something? That should reduce spam by a lot. (Sorry if this has been discussed my internet is slow and search is taking for ever)

That's an interesting idea but a lot of people are lurkers and only make an account if they need help. If mods disapprove because of spam, and the person doesn't know how to use the search function, they would feel left out and confused. There would also have to be many more mods. That's what i think anyway

What's to stop the person from spamming after the 10 post limit though?

It's best just to report the member when you see it.

That is not going to happen. It would create far too much work for staff and it would make things much much worse for new users.

Just reporting spammers is the best way.

That would help if the mods were faster in removing/locking stuff.

I've been scarred twice on temp! The mods took like 20-30 minutes to remove those posts!

actually north korea. please send help
I don't post anything on that iso site because of post approval. If I were a new member on GBATemp, having post approval would probably deter me from posting here, too.

    my dad works for nintendo.
but we have strong policies against bumping old threads... it's encoraged to create a new thread over necrobumping..
if we locked the new threads for new guys they would had no choice but to find exisiting ones which most likely are 2 years old..

A better idea than this is just to straight-up ban any stupid repeat offenders in my opinion. If the 'Temp is so keen on keeping as much dead wood out as possible, then let's try to kick the dead wood out as swiftly as possible when they start to arise and become more known to the community.

yeah i understand that , but it would block spambot posts , and discourage crap threads (id rather some shit be dumped in a old thread than new posts with the same subject) it may even encourage them to read some stickies before asking fuckked up questions........ its a simple group permissions tweak in xenforo ..

There have been some things that one can't unsee.

Might I suggest only auto-moderating posts containing images (and maybe links) made by users with less than X posts (where X is 5, 10, or some other arbitrary small number)?
    Advantages:
-Helps reduce certain kinds of spam
-It's less likely that someone will post things that require brain bleach afterwards (at least, less likely for users to register just for this).
    Disadvantages:
-Requires more work for moderators (but not as much as auto-moderating ALL posts made by new users)
-May auto-moderate posts by legit users (maybe a legit developer makes an account just to post a useful tool, complete with links and screenshots)

The odds you of you needing to post a picture if you have yet to reach Member status is quite low.

I'd suggest to not allow anyone with a Newcomer status to posts pictures. So you'd need to have at least 100 posts to be allowed to posts pictures.

As I said, I doubt Newcomers would need to posts pictures, so it wouldn't really affect them.

I think newcomers should be allowed to post pictures, but have them be automoderated. It would be a big turnoff if someone either wanted to post screenshots for their legit program, or post a screenshot of a legit bug in an existing program, and was told "Sorry, you're not allowed to do this". Automoderation I think is the best compromise for this kind of situation.

This would add some workload to the mods/admins. They already take some time in removing/locking threads when needed.

If something like this were to happen, Temp would need to hire more mods.
