BAFTA Fellowship Awardee and Nintendo big boss Shigeru Miyamoto has conceded that 2009 was not what they would consider to be a successful year for Nintendo, this despite being a consistent topnotcher in monthly hardware sales charts.

In an interview with magazine The Economist, Miyamoto expressed dismay over the lack of fun products released from their development labs the past year. "The fact that in 2009 we were not able to sell more than we did in 2008 was simply that in comparison, we were not able to produce fun-enough products," he explained.

Furthermore, "There are always ups and downs in this business. As long as we create unique and unprecedented experiences with videogames, there should be nothing to worry about."

With the impending release of Sony's and Microsoft's motion technologies, we wonder if Nintendo's counterpunch would be. They've got to be keeping something up in their sleeves.

Less "touch screen!" and "motion control!", more "fun!". The GC Controller can still serve as a main part of the Wii, and not everything on the DS needs to be touch screened or need to -fully- utilize both screens. (Constant touch-screen isn't always the best thing.)

That and they just keep coming out with DS variations....that are pointlessly more expensive than older models.

They have to make some new installments of old series (Starfox). And some more Hardcore to compete with PS360

I think Ninty is hitting a barrier with the casual gamers. Ninty has already admitted they are not good at making 'core" games, so they target casual gamers (and children) instead. Personally, if it wasn't for 3rd party games, I'd have dumped off the DS long ago. There's a big difference between what a casual gamer calls fun and what a core gamer calls fun. There's also the fact that core gamers tend to buy and play lots of games, whereas a casual gamer finds a couple games they like and just play those. A core gamer "makes time" for games, but a casual gamer only plays games in their "spare time".

I think Ninty will eventually find that catering to the casual gamer is NOT the ONLY way to go. Casual gamers are fair-weather-friends at best. They need to be able to cover the whole demographic of the gaming world, not just the lower end (casual gamers and children).

I think many casual gamers that get sucked into becoming gamers from Ninty's casual games have since become core gamers. Since Ninty themselves have admitted not being able to support core gamers properly, these casual-gamers-gone-core-gamers are forced to the big-boy consoles instead to get the games they crave after hitting their gaming adolescence and graduating from casual gamer to core gamer. Nintendo ends up losing the very gamers they created.

i believe nintendo were underpressure last year hence they tried to keep the fans glued to nintendo consoles no matter who they were and possibly the mix btn casual and core games... planning is more of an importance for nintendo now

Sin and Punishment is nice though, but we still need some

Star Fox
F-zero

Heck, not even a Star Fox VC release after all this time.
A finished version of Star Fox 2 snes would be nice too.

Star-Zero F-Fox

They should really get SEGA's AV team to do F-zero again.
Also a Galaxy Force style Star Fox wouldn't be half bad either.
Waggles controls would be horrible for those games though.

But ya, 2009 wasn't very fun Nintendo wise.
Unless you're in Japan.
