You clearly don't understand canon, dumbass. By your logic, only a handful of the Zelda games are canon, and it's impossible to decide which are and which aren't, since they fall under different timelines.

i ahve given you plenty of reasons already. direct quotes and facts. why even mention the fact that prime is a seperate sidestory if that does not mean tehy are non canon? if tehy were canon they would not mention that fact. just read the INGAME story thingies in other M and it is CLEAR there is NO mention of the prime games. why do you think is that? one might think those events were signifacant, dont you think?

and there is NO confirmation its the same timeline as your links ARE OLD AND OUTDATED.

how often do I ahve to say this?

PRIME GAMES ARE NON CANON SINCE OTHER M WAS DEVELOPED - THEY WERE CANON BEFORE, NOW THEY ARE NO LONGER

You don't understand what canon is. Just because something isn't vital to the main story, that doesn't make it non-canon. Why don't you take a look at the Zelda timeline and tell me which games are canon?

    Timeline is irrelevant.

Edit: ER has managed to troll this topic way off course. Let's ignore him and get back on track.

I think the general consensus is that you should play Metroid Prime Trilogy if you can. If you can't, play MP3: Corruption, but expect some confusion (read the scans to answer a lot of it). Metroid Other M is an optional one, some people like it, some don't.

Thanks again all of you for the feedback! None excluded, all have been helpful. I welcome any more if there is.

It's ok if it's canon or not. What matters most is you like the game :yaywii:

P.S. No, I haven't bought any of them yet. Still eyeing them on eBay because auction is still on. *hint* now's the time to throw me your money *hint*

Until Nintendo comes out and specifically states "the Prime games aren't canon," which they haven't (if Sakamoto had officially considered that the case, be would've flat out said that, instead of suggesting "it's best to think of them that way"), then canon is what they are. Metroid Other M does directly contradict Prime at times (Samus saying it was her first joint mission since becoming a bounty hunter despite Metroid Prime 3, unfreezable Metroids being a problem even though Samus defeated many without the ice beam in the Prime Trilogy), but considering the absolutely hideous writing that often doesn't make sense even within itself, those seem to me more of extreme oversights than "proof" that Prime isn't canon.

And that's all I'll say on the matter.

Edit: I just saw Joostin's last post saying we should get back on topic. Sorry guys.

And on topic, and trying not to sound like I'm trolling, if you care at all about the story*, I'd recommend Super Metroid over either Metroid Prime 3 or Metroid: Other M. But, if the story doesn't really matter to you, then I'd recommend Metroid Prime 3 because (1) you can actually generally ignore the story most the time (Metroid: Other M's cumulative cut scenes clocks in at over an hour) and (2) as impressive as Metroid: Other M is at pulling off a platforming third-person 3D adventure, Metroid Prime 3 does a ton better job at putting you in a position to actually see the enemy instead of relying upon the auto lock-on to spam charged shots or try to clumsily use missiles (which honestly are best used only in the small intervals where its clear you're meant to use them).

*And this is where I'd like to note that Metroid, as a whole, has never had much of a good story to it. Don't take this is a put-down against the Metroid series, as I'm still a big fan of it (just like Mega Man [X]). But if you actually stop and think about most the storylines presented in each of the Metroid games, there's usually massive logical flaws. Of course, that's fine by me. :) The point where it gets to be annoying, of course, is when developers after recognizing those flaws just go "aw, well, that's non-canon" instead of trying to contrive excuses while further making more content that violates previous stories. And it doesn't take them saying, "it's non-canon". It's usually enough to, you know, be so incredibly inconsistent at a base level with the old story line--like if suddenly Samus were a brunette and she made a point of "I was always a brunette". :)

    - sending in just one badass bounty hunter (not a mercenary) because a whole platoon of marines failed)
    - a metroid infested planet where lava blocks off 99% of the metroids, anyways, but let's still commit genocide against them (and it's especially silly when you consider how often the federation in later games is shown to be [secretly] complicit in questionable conduct in exploiting metroid-level threat creatures)
    - trying to use a metroid as a generator and recreating the circumstances of metroid all over again
    - the x parasite -- and incredibly linear gameplay
    - phazon -- x parasite redux and the incredibly dubious use of phazon by the federation
    - and of course, a heavily story bent but canon contradicting at near every level, other m

The Prime series (and Corruption in particular) had a very detailed and immense story, so long as you read the scans. I found it quite fascinating.

Something interesting is that Metroid Prime was not originally intended to be the first in a series. Retro just included that last part (I'm keeping out spoilers) as a bonus, but without any real meaning. It wasn't till later that they decided to make a trilogy out of it.

My point, though, is that Phazon is Applied Phlebotinum, which gets consistently worse as the series goes on. I mean, really, Phazon is now a quasi-virus that be sent/teleported to infect Aurora units across the galaxy? And let's not even get into the whole debacle that is Leviathans (and their cores) and how inconsistent that is with Prime 1. Basically, Prime 3 spends more time raising yet new issues with the story than it manages to really sufficiently answer questions leading up to the finally.

And having all Phazon everywhere simultaneously go *poof* because you destroyed Dark Samus who somehow merged with all the Phazon on Phaze... It's about as bad as the whole Phalanx storyline in X-Men (which draws incredibly high parallels to Phazon, btw).

I guess what I'm saying is, I wouldn't mind so much that Metroid is retreading on old science fiction stories/ideas, if it at least was a bit more self-consistent about it. Instead, Phazon just keeps getting more superpowers to explain away the inconsistencies. And at some point, Phazon becomes Superman and we have to wonder how Samus destroyed Superman. :/

while i'm also very sure that prime was at no point considered canon, it doesnt really matter, does it? it does have a good enough story to legitimate blasting aliens on several planets.

also, guy, just play prime 3 already if you dont want to pirate the trilogy. i mean, honestly, its not like buying any of the games used from ebay or from a gamestop would give nintendo another dime to spend or anything... but whatever, you should probably skim over the plot summaries for the first two games if you actually care about the story at all. if you dont, go wild.

Other M was flawed, game play was fairly decent the only thing that set it back was the representation of Samus's character. However Prime 3 I felt was far superior, wouldn't have mind online deathmatch though

You didn't collect and read all the scans, did you? It's all explained in there, you just have to go through it. The Space Pirate and Phaaze lore is especially important.
Phaaze (nobody knows its real name, that was just one they gave it) is a sentient planet, meaning it is conscious, and is the source of all Phazon. That's how Dark Samus kept regenerating. At the beginning of Corruption, you see Dark Samus regenerate on Phaze, although you don't understand where it is until the end of the game. The planet itself was trying to take over the universe. The Leviathan seeds (offspring of Phaaze) were creating sort of "slave" planets so that it could multiply and extend its reach.

The idea of a sentient planet was especially cool to me.

Multiplayer in Metroid doesnt really work, even though the DS game was fairly decent. Some games should stay single player focused...

Most, if not all, video game stories are nonsense, so I wouldn't mind ;) it's the game that matters most. Stories are just complementary.

It's local multiplayer. You need friends to play properly. IIRC, there are AI characters who will take the place of anyone missing though.

And a response to your other post, the story is not in anyway nonsense. It's very deep and complicated. You just need to pay attention to the scans to fully understand it. If you are lazy or just fail to scan stuff, then yeah, it's going to be confusing.

there are some fantastic videogame stories out there, mostly in underrated games that were ages ahead of their time. i highly recommend checking out a game called "Second Sight" which was available on PS2, Xbox, Gamecube and PC back in the day!

back on metroid, prime hutners was for the DS and a multiplayer focused experience. there were bots to blast as far as i am aware and there also was a mediocre single player portion to the game but all in all its porbably one of the worst metroid games out there. gameplay wise, other M is better but otehr m has horrible writing.

as for good stories in videogames:
    • Second Sight
    • Metroid Prime 1 (parts 2 and 3 are okay but get really video-gamey)
    • Ultimate Spider-Man (as written by the dude who wrote the comics)
    • The Assassins Creed Series
    • The Uncharted Trilogy
    • The Last of Us
    • Enslaved

Nice, I'm looking forward to this! I enjoy picking up stuffs and reading them like in alone in the dark and dead space extraction--but reading/listening to logs in extraction isn't much enjoyable because it's a hectic game.

Agreed: there's no doubt video game stories can be thought provoking or have moral values. Havent tried any of those in your list except the 2nd assassins creed: I wasn't sucked in though.

What I generally mean by nonsense is for example, there's no such thing as a female space bounty hunter that can roll into a ball like a sandshrew  but ultimately meh, who cares? It's a video game. Rocket scienze rulez! ;)

added enslaved. Samus does not roll into a ball, she just rolls herself together, the suit forms the ball around her. not that much more silly than any stephen king story or any other scifi story...
