would it be possible to do a full rom hack of a mmbn series game including editing the story, characters and maps? me and a couple friends were interested in making one. are there programs made for editing the sprites, maps and text? I dont care how difficult it would be i just want to know if it would be physically possible to do such.

Possible- anything can be edited and as long as you do not try to push the limits of the hardware too much (which simply doing a kind of fan game in the original engine would be far from).

Means to do it- Megaman has some tools and information but nothing close to the likes pokemon, golden sun, fire emblem or even advance wars the last time I checked and most places I saw megaman battle network work revolved mainly around cheats, asset extraction* and save state/save game editing. There were a few boards/sites vying for the "go to place for MMBN hacking" crown, but most of them seemed to be on the forum incubator networks which I rarely count as a good sign, still http://rmexe-zone.vndv.com/index.php was one of the better ones and it includes some information. All that said if you have the information then C# and python have never been easier to learn and both have made some very powerful graphical ROM hacking applications and you can probably even adapt some of the existing tools to do what you want (sprite extraction/editing tools are usually so much extra compression and different offsets and even level editors are not that bad to convert between games).

There was also a German translation of the first game http://www.romhacking.net/translations/1152/ which you might be able to learn something from (similar in nature tends to mean similar in code and it would have tackled graphics and text).

*these are probably some of the better things to read up on as extraction turns to editing quite easily.

If you need help with some of the more technical things then feel free to ask as well- we might not do an awful lot of game specific stuff around here but the more technical stuff we don't shy away from.

thanks for the reply, i'll definitely check out the german translation and see what i can learn. i have seen programs for what im talking about on rmexe-zone but they were buggy and hard to use. adapting existing tools is not something i thought of before but will consider.
