Following a leak from a South African gaming magazine, Australian magazine PC Powerplay has confirmed a long running rumor: multiplayer is coming to Mass Effect 3.

Not much information is given about the multiplayer mode, but it is said to be in development by BioWare Montreal and will include co-op elements.

Mass Effect 3's multiplayer is perhaps one of the first multiplayer games for BioWare (minus Star Wars: The Old Republic) for the new generation, and also marks their entry into a competitive console multiplayer game.

Mass Effect 3 is pegged for a March 6th release date next year and will be the last game in the "Commander Sheppard" saga.

UPDATE: It appears that the multiplayer is only co-op, with no word of a competitive multiplayer.

I hope their not putting to much emphasis on the shooter aspect. I do think this can make ME a lot better.
It was a mediocre game, and I wasn't as impressed as the internet had me to believe I was going to.

Mass Effect blew me away, it's honestly the greatest RPG I've ever played. Both of them are.

I just think they need a good shooting mechanic but don't drop the RPG elements from the first Mass Effect. The first Mass Effect was a RPG with shooter elements, the second Mass Effect was a shooter with RPG elements. Still, both games won purely on storytelling so I consider them the best RPGs.

EDIT: As for whether they'll ditch a good single player for multiplayer, I highly doubt it. People bought Mass Effect for single player, they're not gonna sacrifice that. I feel that this could be a rare mixture of a game that has perfect single player and multiplayer (a rarity nowadays) or a game with strong single player but a tacked on, useless multiplayer. I doubt it'll be a multiplayer game though with flimsy single player.

I am certainly excited about this. I know that I am going to play through the single player numerous times and the multiplayer will be something nice to break it up a little and possibly increase the longevity of the title, not that there will be a lack of hours invested in this game already.

I really hope the don't sacrifice singleplayer for this.
And it better be at least 3 discs, ME2 was 2 disks without multiplayer and this should have a much grander campaign.

Bioware revealed all at an EA press event I attended in Vegas in September. Forced everyone under embargo until a date in the near future. All I can say is, the info that has leaked so far is remarkably incomplete. Once that embargo lifts, the whole thing will be exposed; there won't be an information trickle, far as I can tell.

I'm going to say that the multiplayer will just be there to appease to the shooter fans who crave Co-op. ME1 was great. I didn't like the direction it went with ME2. Still great, though.

Let's just see what they do. I wouldn't be surprised to see co-op done like Dead Rising; They just cloned the main guy and added absolutely nothing to the story.

Darn, I was hoping it wouldn't be. That said, it was only because I was scared of how they would sculpt the Singleplayer to allow for Multiplayer. It could be good, and I love me some co-op, I'm not a big fan of competitive online after all. So now I guess I'm actually excited for this, but I hope it doesn't affect their development of Singleplayer.

You know, this may have been what the delay was for (besides not wanting to release in the blitz that will be November). If that's the case and the multiplayer ends up being good, well, the wait will be worth it.

I'm counting down the days to March. Get here faster, damn it!

    EDIT:

And it looks like we got some more details.

...And Shattered Steel, Baldur's Gate 1, 2, and Neverwinter Nights. Bioware games have had multiplayer for a while now.
...Oh, carry on then :P. I think that Neverwinter Nights kinda blurs the lines between both generations, though.

after mass effect 1, ppl stated about some problems in the game and they were fixed in mass effect 2. ppl then requested multiplayer, do u think they will decrease anything? unlikely

i really liked the game but like all shooting/fps games, it got hard and hence frustrating so i left it.

They decreased quite a bit from ME1 to ME2. Less weapons, less exploration and less abilities, even though it was on two discs.
I really hope they dont sacrifice anything this time.

Eurogamer posted a bunch of info today. It's apparently a wave-based co-op multiplayer (think Horde Mode from Gears of War) with different classes and races, each with their own perks (Krogans can charge people, Soldiers can use Omniblades, etc). There's a level cap of twenty and you can purchase new skills, weapons, etc, all chosen before you start.

You can also view your progress in the multiplayer on iOS devices, Facebook, and "more".

    Full details here

I hope they focus Mass Effect 3 on it's RPG element rather than it's TPS element.

The last thing we need now is a would-be great sequel turn to another milked out shooter

Even though I absolutely love both Me1 and 2 somehow I`m a little worried about that as well. I mean they already main-streamed ME2 a little with making it more shooter-oriented and also separating the story into more refined story-parts and now adding multiplayer, which isn`t a bad thing per se but still it makes you worried about the direction and emphasis of the title...

But who knows. I think it`s going to be an amazing experience, even if there`s multiplayer, which imo is completely unnecessary!!
