Mario Kart World Direct - April 17 2025 - roundup

Nintendo is bringing us more information about one of the Switch 2 titles, in the form of a Nintendo Direct solely focused on Mario Kart World. This 15-minute video showcases more gameplay footage and extra information not seen in the initial reveal trailer.

First up are the new courses. Mario Bros Circuit is a desert themed track, while Crown City is more of a traditional downtown city course. Salty Salty Speedway lets you race in the canals. Starview Peak has icy tracks to navigate. Boo Cinema merges haunted mansion themes.

Toad's Factory, Peach Beach, Wario Shipyard, and more will also be in the game.

Older courses are making a return, in a reimagined way.

The roster you expect are here, but new characters will be playable, like Goomba, Spike, and a Cow. Lakitu is included. Baby Peach, Daisy, and Rosalina are on the roster. Pauline is shown. Mario 64 Penguin is playable. There's a playable Snowman.

Just like before, you can customize your vehicle for adjusted stats.

There's a 24-playable multiplayer.

The Grand Prix races are like how cups in previous games work, a lineup of tracks to race through. But this time, you'll need to drive to each track's location between races.

Knockout Tour are extended races that go across the entire map. You'll be kicked out of the race if you don't do well enough.

Coin Shell lets you toss a shell that drops coins for you to collect. Ice Flower lets you freeze enemies. The hammer lets you chuck hammers like a Hammer Bro. The Mega Mushroom turns you giant so you can run others over. Feather gives you a big jump. Kamek will transform opponents when used as an item.

Tilt controls and the Mario Kart Wheel accessory make a return.

There are items you get from locations on the map, that unlock outfits for the cast. They'll let you use those unlocked costumes in races, too.

Drifting while moving straight will give you a charge jump.

You can grind on rails now, to avoid items and take shortcuts.

Wall jumps are a thing.

There's a rewind mode that you can use to move yourself back after a mistake, but time won't rewind with you. When you use the rewind, you'll go back a few seconds, but the other players will continue onward, unaffected.

Time Trials return.

VS Race will let you race classically with 3 laps, or you can make races from course-to-course.

Balloon Battle is back. Coin Runners is a battle mode where you collect as many coins to win.

Free Roam is where you can explore the open world and do missions. You can collect coins hidden in the world, and find new things. There's a photo mode in this mode. \

There's 4-player splitscreen on one console, or 8-player local wireless. Up to 24 for online play.

While waiting for online matches to start, you can drive together in the open world map.

It supports the new Switch 2's GameChat. The Camera will put your face on the player bubbles so you can see their expressions as you go by.

That's the Direct!

Going to repost something that I said on Discord:

"More information about Mario Kart World for those who wanted more information about Mario Kart World. Alright trailer but I just want for the system to release by now"

I find Mario Kart so incredibly boring. It has been the same game for multiple decades now, with some minor polish applied.
Respectfully "You are wrong"

Each game had different core aspect that differentiate them enough to be separately unique from each title

Double Dash - Double racers

DS - Mission Mode

Wii - Bikes? It was more tame I'll give you that

7 - Was a big game changer, gliders and underwater driving just opened for new opportunities of creativity and track design

World - Pretty much expanding, you can wall jump which made my balls drop so that's awesome

I mean from a distance it's just racing, but you ever wonder why the franchise is so popular? It's innovative

They should have atleast specified if there would be other CC modes like 200cc etc. Are we locked to 150 or something?!? 200cc free roam (maybe more) would be pretty fun

I found 1 new problem with this game, it's battle mode

We only got two modes now
- I like Balloon Battle and Coin Runners, but was it so hard to bring back Shine Thief, Bom Omb Blast, Renegade Roundup or even like 1 or 2 new modes?

The Tracks might actually suck :shit:
- So the new battle track we've seen just looks like another knock off block fort, but in a city
- From the map, direct and music, we're also getting 3 circle tracks which is boring as shit. (Big Donut, Thwomp Desert and Chain Chomp Roulette

1744900525820.png
1744900567850.png

Then we're going a step backward and come to back to playing battle mode on regular tracks like Mario Kart 8 :mellow:
- Why is coin runners on Moo Moo Meadows? I don't care if there's more racers, the normal course are too big and sparse for any action to be happening

I hate how Battle Mode is just an afterthought to modern Mario Kart

Wii added doing tricks off ramps, motion controls, Funky Kong and gave us the modern form of drift boost.

It's the oldest Mario Kart you can go back to that feels like Mario Kart as we know it today.
Why not hide characters, karts and "gliders" in that massive world, and give an actual reason to "free roam"?
You know, to unlock things in the game?
I was disappointed they didn't mention the quests and special coins unlocking anything.

Never leave a well sailing ship.

I still think the big world holds too few interesting things. Just collecting coins and outfits is super boring. The only interesting thing was that special mission where you would jump between three lines to collect blue coins. If there's more of that with some creativity, that's nice.
Apart from that, being open world distracts you from noticing that it has way fewer courses than MK8D with those DLC waves.

It still looks like a fun game and I'm going to get it.

It's nice that we got to see a new little detail or two, but this felt more like a 15 minute ad rather than something akin to the Smash Directs that were actually interesting. I suppose there's only so much you can talk about a Mario Kart game.

Rainbow Road being this final boss track that you only unlock after beating all others should give a nice sense of reward.

Also I'm maining this motherfucker.

I can smell the upcoming dlc's on my tongue.
More battlemodes,and more tracks.
Base game 80 + Dlc....
Maybe this is what gaming is today. A shame.

But still no other real games announced for the launch. Thats odd. No real bangers on launch until today.

I was a bit worried about the game lacking customisation since there were rumours that it didn't have any and just standard cars for all of them. I enjoy pimping my rides in racing games (even MK).
