You keep the throttle button in just before the countdown timer gets to 1. Roughly about 1.5 seconds to go. If you keep the throttle button pressed before that, like nearer to two seconds to go, you spin out before the start.

I'm guessing you get more points if you beat someone with a better ranking and less so if they are worse than you, a bit like how they do it with chess.

The way I get my boost:

Hold down accelerate as soon as 2 appears, then release as it fades out then start accelerating again as soon as 1 appears for boost.

(May be wrong - but works for me!)

Yeah, that would work too. It's not an exact timing thing but something to do with how high your revs are. So there could be a few ways.

Hold down A as 2 disappears. Same as Mario Kart DS. Also, press A the moment your kart touches the ground after being dropped by Lakatu for a boost.

I think that's drafting (don't confuse with drifting). You do it by driving directly behind someone else for a bit. It's a pretty common racing technique.

Also note that this time around, they is different level of starting boost.
If you press A when 2 dissapear, you'll get the smaller boost, but if you press it exactly 1.5 seconds before go, as Hardcore Gamer said, you'll get the greater boost. There's at list 4 or 5 different levels. Try it in time attack mode against your ghost. There's quite a difference.

It's actually the slip stream. It's been in Mario Kart games since the N64 version, but it seems that its a lot easier to do in this one!

Took me a while to get the hang of the boost in this game, but now I can do it pretty much all the time.
You need to do it right before the 1.
(I didn't know there was different levels of boost, I hope I have the best one [IMG])

    Who coined the term "Drafting?"

That makes no sense at all. (It's a slipstream...)

i think its called drafting in NFS carbon , as you have a "drafter" on your team that arranges you the slipstream... :-)

The more players , the more you earn point / loose points

Your level and your oppenents' levels are also important in the work of the system points
