Several games in MAME 2003 require samples for proper sound emulation (eg. Galaga's explosion, Donkey Kong's thumps, and Mario's foot steps, Q*bert's cursing), which are enabled by the "samples" directory containing the zipped sound files.

Do the MAME2003 and MAME2003-plus cores currently support samples, and if so, where do you put the samples directory?

    Solved it!

Put your "samples" folder in: /retroarch/cores/system/mame2003/ and a copy in /retroarch/cores/system/mame2003-plus

Now I have sound working in MAME games that need it.
