Make WAD from content.bin (or ELF/DOL)

There seem to be dozens of wad files available to install. All of these must have been taken from either the Wii system memory, or captured packet-by-packet from a data stream. I haven't seen anything about the later, so I would guess the first.

Channels are stored on the Wii as encrypted content.bin files, with corresponding data.bin and apparently with a ticket as well. Is a NAND dump necessary, or is copying the content.bin sufficient? What then has to be done to make a WAD (or ELF or DOL)?

For something that doesn't break any laws (unless you're in America) this stuff sure is hard to find out.

    Thanks.

WADs can be made from DOLs, but that's used for homebrew.

The NAND dump provides you with all of the necessary files for a VC title, such as the ticket that I don't believe can be found in content.bin.

I'm still trying to figure out where to get TRAILER files, as they don't seem to be in NAND.

I see. But aren't tickets locked to individual machines? If I want to install a channel from one machine on another, what good will the ticket do me?

    Thanks

The hacked VC WADs all use the Trucha Sign bug, effectively negating the need for a WAD signed to your system.

    Hi again Teq,

In that case, am I right in thinking that I can grab a content.bin, grab a Trucha signer and voila? Because that would be fine!

    Thanks again

I'll test it and get back to you.

EDIT: No, the ticket is still on the Wii and that's what needs to be signed.

So a ticket extractor utility would be most ideal. Title Lister doesn't seem to include this super power, but I'm betting Wii Linux can do it. Off I go to find out...

EDIT: Hmm. No, no it can't really do anything. And there doesn't seem to be a homebrew file manager yet...

    NAND dump...

You'll get the APP files for all of your WADs, the Tickets, and the Certs.

The only thing I can't find are TRAILER files.

The trouble with NAND dumping is that I'll end up with a massive encrypted file. I haven't yet found any info on how to get into that file.

    There's two versions of it.

    NANDFS dumps the unencrypted directories:

this is the dumbest post ever. You need the ticket to install a VC title. you get the ticket from a FILE SYSTEM DUMP NOT A NAND DUMP.

Actually, that was the dumbest post ever...

The NAND is the flash memory installed in the Wii, thus dumping it would be dumping the NAND.

Just because the tool that performs the unencrypted dump is called NANDFS, doesn't change the fact that it's dumping the NAND.

Teq, that's exactly what I was going to say - NAND simply being a semi-conductor based binary storage medium on which the filesystem resides - but then I couldn't be arsed. Never know whether it's better to shoot people down or let them carry on. There's too many complete morons on the internet to bother with them really. They hurt my head.

Anyway, with the NAND dumping, I'll soon have a ticket to add to my content.bin. It will be called something.ticket and be in a logical relative location to private\wii\title\HAWE - probably.

I need to sign this ticket with the Trucha Signer and public key.bin and transer it to my Wii - probably by bundling it with the content.bin as a WAD.

Um, how do I do that? [IMG]

EDIT: I found a guide for ISOs earlier, but it doesn't seem relevant to what I need to do. Rest assured this signed channel will be a torrent by next weekend.

WiiBrew had a wiki on the structure of content.bin..... I don't think youre going to get around it easily.

Yeah they still have it. I don't need to do that do I? There's no program to do automate it?

    Nope.

That's why everyone deals with WADs and goes for the .APP.

There are .APP files in the WADs that you can use to repack them with whatever data you like.

    Oh.

Google's not too good at searching for, well, lots of things, but in this case info on wii / app / wad. Do I still need the ticket, or just the content.bin?

Let me try and ask a better question: how do I get a channel from one Wii to another? lol (namely the Metroid Preview channel).

    Cheers
