Translating Hiragana to english is no simple task unless you read and understand Japanese fluently.
I think translating this is great practice. (which could be another possible reason he's doing this.)
I know a few Hiragana characters, I just wish I could remember all of em w/o looking at a chart.
On another note, I noticed this today:
In the union room when you go to say things (the "chat" persay)
the Japanese will translate to English on the receiving game.
EX: A Japanese phrase on Soulsilver will show up as English on Diamond.
Not necessary
at all to do, but I just thought it to be interesting.
If you want to learn some more basic japanese, find the DS game "My Japanese Coach". It can teach you all the kana (hiragana, katakana), some common words, and more.
I actually learned kana and some kanji in high school... I had a real japanese teacher who would give us good mnemonics for the kana (like the hirigana for KA looks like a KARATE KICK, KE looks a bit like an old man with a CANE, KI looks like a KEY, etc
)
Yes, basic but not nearly enough to translate a game XD!
For that you should learn the particles and learn what each does.
Another place where you'll get stuck is the verbs. Even if your using a dictionary.
See verbs have dictionary bases(Or endings) which are usually ru. But the root of the verb can have different bases.
Take this for instance...
The verb hanasu(Ha-Na-Su, 3 Japanese Characters) means talk in Japanese. Take off the last character(Su) to get the verbs root, Hana. "Su" is what we'll refer to as the base.
The basic formula for verbs in Japanese is...
Prefix + Root + Base + Ending
Now for now we're not going to use a prefix, but hana is our root and su is our base so...
Hana + su = Stem
Our stem is what we get when we combine our root and our base.
Also, how do you know if something is a verb? Well,
Japanese verbs all end in u.
Verb endings are also something complicated that I won't get into. Also, I won't get into which verbs are Godan verbs or which verbs are Ichidan verbs.
Now any verb who's
dictionary base ends in Su, has 7 other alternate bases it can use.
Here are all the bases for Su. There are 8 possible bases.
