Lulz Security, which claims to have been behind a recent hack on Sony, sent an email to NHS administrators revealing it had found a way to breach the service's network.

But the Department of Health was quick to deny that any patient information was at risk.

The hackers said they did not intend to steal any data.

Styling themselves as "pirate ninjas", LulzSec posted on Twitter the e-mail it sent to the NHS.

No harm

"While you aren't considered an enemy - your work is of course brilliant - we did stumble upon several of your admin passwords," the e-mail read.

It lists the stolen information - but blacks out the names in the tweet.

"We mean you no harm and only want to help you fix your tech issues," the mail continued.

The Department of Health played down the warning.

"This is a local issue affecting a very small number of website administrators. No patient information has been compromised," a Department of Health spokesperson told the BBC.

"No national NHS information systems have been affected. The Department has issued guidance to the local NHS about how to protect and secure all their information assets."

Like many hacker groups, LulzSec appears to be a loosely organised collective with no-one really in charge.

It claims to specialise in finding poorly protected websites to attack. Information they steal is sometimes posted to the web.

The group has made the headlines in recent months for a number of hacking attacks.

At the beginning of June it claimed to have broken into servers that run SonyPictures.com and accessed the details of a million users.

A day later it claimed to have hacked Nintendo's website.[/p]

Props for not stealing the data.

I know what they're doing is wrong, and they probably should be caught and arrested, but the past few weeks of following them and seeing what they can do is hilarious.

Well, they got the abilities of doing things and can get messy for a lot of people.
but they havent done any damage to NHS, which would be shit for us.

They shoudnt be doing all that in the first place, I am aware of that.

I'm sure they're still gonna get shit for "targeting" NHS. Kind of like how they started stealing one of Sony's data bases by date of birth, so automatically they were "targeting the elderly".

Also today I saw an article on sky news about a 15 year old girl called Alice, who only has weeks to live writing a 'bucket list' of things to do before she dies, she put the list on twitter and got some really high profile people interested. It was even mentioned in our Parliament during 'Prime Minister's Questions'.

Anyway one of the things she wanted to do was to get people to go on the Bone Marrow Register. LulzSec where telling her this morning that they would get it trending for her. They also posted the Bone Marrow Donation website on their feed for her.

That's the point, we shouldn't be giving props to Lulzsec for not doing something illegal. They shouldn't be doing it in the first place.

But knowing NHS admin, they'll probably lose millions of people's data on the train. That's British administration incompetence.

These guys are amazingly talented but can we really trust what they say? They seem sincere enough but who could blame someone for being pessimistic?

Let's hope the companies they tell heed their warnings before any other hacker groups catch wind of weak security.

Lol, I would hire these guys in a heart beat to help protect my network if I was the NHS. I mean who knows better to protect a network then the people who break into them. I'm glad they are trying to help and didnt steal anything.

Tip my hat? For these stupid dicks?

So now every decent enough hacker knows there are secrets to be had and that the NHS is quite hackable, bravo.

If they were doing any good they would just only tell the NHS and that's it but instead they are boasting that they can do this sort of thing over and over.

If I was the Secretary of State or Minister of State in the Health Ministry and I found out NHS records had been compromised. I would be giving props that an anonymous, unaccountable hacker group who have engaged in illegal activity did not compromise NHS records. I would be angry this group compromised NHS records, which they have no right in doing so. Lulzsec are just internet anarchists, there's nothing to admire.
