There is no way to play it on DS, but you can on PSP (via PSPKVM). But on real hardware it's a completely different experience.
Actually, you can do it but you'll need a DSTwo(+) to do it and the result is barely better than the PS1 emulation but it's possible. However, I agree with you in the idea that the best way to do this is to use a java emulator on PSP, indeed PSPKVM will do the job. There is no way to play it on DS, but you can on PSP (via PSPKVM). Well, the fact that you can't hear the bgms or the sound effects is no small thing; It's a serious flaw. Sure, if someone will port it to DSi by updating and improving it, that would be another story. It seems to work, although there are graphical glitches and no sound.
I had never tested PstrosNDS, I installed it this evening, I am testing games for Nokia 3220 in 128x128 resolution, I can share the first results but I still have quite a few games to test.I created a compatibility list for PstrosNDS and other contributors tested the J2me version of Sonic Unleashed. It seems to work, although there are graphical glitches and no sound. I hope someone reworks PstrosNDS again in the future.

I took a look at this list; very few games tested and all at low resolution (practically microscopic). Not even a 240x320 game; the best and most numerous java games available have this graphic resolution! In my opinion, for those who want to fully enjoy these games even nowadays, the best solution is to play them on a Nokia/ Ericcson/ Samsung keypad/numpad phone, easily available on the used online market.Sure, here The compatibility list
Since not many games have been tested yet, I made it with the help of someone. Yes, the creator did say that there is a screen limitation and only below 240x320 will work. And even then without sound, which is a shame. Yes, playing natively on a phone would be better than using an emulator, or alternatively the J2me emulator on Android is good enough.I took a look at this list; very few games tested and all at low resolution (practically microscopic). By the way, does the J2me emulator in DSTWO run well? I wonder if you can record the gameplay while playing using that?I had never tested PstrosNDS, I installed it this evening, I am testing games for Nokia 3220 in 128x128 resolution, I can share the first results but I still have quite a few games to test.

I'm not sure I have enough time to fill out an excel file with all the details relating to each game but I can take screenshots on my PC for the games I tested, giving the main points of what works or doesn't work, so you can, if you wish, use it to expand your compatibility listFeel free to contribute, just request it.
It depends on the games, overall it works not too badly and the sound is present, the main problem comes from the resolution, on DSTwo(+), to emulate java games you have to go through Dingux (the Dingoo emulator ) and the resolution on Dingux (DStwo(+)) has never been optimized therefore the image resolution is quite compressed which has the effect of slowing down the games.By the way, does the J2me emulator in DSTWO run well?
