OP
After being stuck with windows my entire life, I wish to spread my wings and look at Linux as well. I kind of want to start simple with Ubuntu; however, I have no idea where to start and after seeing @VinsCool 's blog from last September, I am very nervous. This is on a laptop.

Specs:
  • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60 GHz
  • 8 GB Ram
  • Currently running Windows 10 Home
  • Not sure what else to put here :/

Download your distro and put it on a stick.
Create a partition for linux.
Install it
Select "Install along something else"
Done.

This, its that simple.

Ubunutu is a bet friendlier when it comes to uninstalling. As linux distros/ubuntu install a start up boot menu so you can choose your OS to boot at start. If you uninstall ubunutu it goes back to the default windows start up, I believe any other linux distro you have to repair the windows boot but don't quote me on that.

Ubuntu will fix a lot for you when it comes to partitioning the harddrive. It will itself see that you got Windows and setup Grub (Grub is that you can choose Linux or Windows at boot) so it's just to install and go.

Installing Ubuntu to the USB now. @tech3475 I would do that, however I would rather just jump right in. I like to learn in a survival-esque situation.

Is there an easy way to switch to Linux Mint, or should I just download/install it now

I think I need a little bit of help here.

I am not sure how I should move from here. There is no option to install along side windows, only to erase the whole disk, which is obviously a no go. What should I do? I can do "something else" and afaik, I need to make a swap area, a /home area, and a root

There is a option to install it along side windows in the Linux Mint installation.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
it says it only works for the original R4, R4i Gold (r4ids.cn), R4iDSN (r4idsn.com) and Acekard R.P.G.
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    nvm it does support mine
