Lenovo Legion Go S announced, will run SteamOS

In late 2023, Lenovo took the plunge into the handheld PC market with their Legion Go device, which featured Windows 11. Now, its successor has been revealed at CES 2025 as the Lenovo Legion Go S, which will stand out from the crowd of other handhelds by being the first non-Valve hardware to offer SteamOS. The system is set for launch in January, but will only initially ship with Windows 11, as the SteamOS variant for the Go S isn't ready yet, and won't be until May. The Windows 11 version will feature 32GB of RAM and is priced at $729.99, while the SteamOS version will only come with 16GB of RAM, for $599.99. For now, the Steam Deck and Legion Go S are the only PC handhelds to officially offer SteamOS, though Valve is rumored to be working on a build of the operating system that would work on other devices, too.

  • The Lenovo Legion Go S (8”, 1) and Lenovo Legion Go S (8”, 1) – Powered by SteamOS™, gaming handheld devices featuring an 8-inch screen with VRR1 support, a chassis sporting fused TrueStrike controllers with adjustable trigger switches and hall-effect joysticks, and the world’s first officially licensed handheld powered by SteamOS™.
  • The Lenovo Legion Go (8.8”, 2), a gaming handheld prototype device planned to feature a native landscape OLED display, up to double the RAM2 compared to previous generation, and a bigger battery.
  • The redesigned Lenovo Legion Pro 7i (16”, 10), Lenovo Legion Pro 5i (16”, 10) and Lenovo Legion Pro 5 (16”, 10) laptops, with new aggressive design language, more performance, and new Lenovo PureSight OLED display options.
  • A fully redesigned Legion Space gaming software solution that unifies all Lenovo Legion device settings, syncs with all Lenovo Legion ecosystem devices, provides access to all games in one library, and features a suite of new AI-powered features that help gamers up their game, their streams, and their enjoyment.
  • The Lenovo Legion Pro 34WD-10 monitor, a PureSight OLED display with gaming-specific features to give competitive gamers an edge on the map.
  • Lenovo also announced other new additions to its Legion and LOQ laptops and desktops, the latest Legion Tab, and a selection of Legion accessories to complement the gaming devices.

I wonder if these will be more dual boot friendly compared to the Steam Deck?

Yes it's doable on the latter, but it can have it's issues e.g. UEFI preferring Windows or updates breaking refind.

Before someone says 'why do you need Windows?', wake me up when Linux has parity with Windows.

I wouldn’t hold your breath for this

As a legion 1 owner. Lenovo will drop support for this within a year. Meaning no more driver updates

Legion 1 can also load bazzite OS which is pretty much steamOS so that doesn’t really mean much either

hmm... if theirs drivers and I wouldn't see why their wouldn't be. Maybe Lenovo won't provide them all but you might be able to chase down from the hardware manufacturers

I'd except Lenovo to provide Windows drivers, although the GPU driver may be an issue long term if it's bespoke and you can't use the stock AMD driver package.

People have been dual booting the legion go 1 for a while without issues

The biggest issue is Lenovo dropping support in less than a year. So many windows games give GPU driver warnings for being out dated

Is it the same as on the Deck where you have to use the OEM provided drivers?

I'm personally hyped for SteamOS going public. Pop!_OS is really starting to get on my nerves.

Looks like Valve is really trying to prop Steam OS up as the Win 11 alternative for those folks on Win 10 that don't want to move to Win 11. I'm on Win 10 with my Steam Deck. I'm not sure that I want to go back to Steam OS. Maybe if it was easy to run my games off my NTFS formatted SD cards. Steam OS just gave me a bad taste when it wasn't able to easily install and load games from USB storage.

I can't do without the touchpads of the steam deck. They're an absolute must for getting even close to full functionality on games without good controller support or for doing save states on emulators for me. Performance is always welcome, but being able to set up controls the way I like them is priority one for me.
