For the past few months, the left shoulder button on my black DS Lite comes and goes.

When it isn't working, I can't do anything to make it work again. The DS just doesn't respond when I click it. I've tried it with my G6 Lite and with retail games.

Then, magically, it will return, like there was never any problem. It will work for a week or two, then stop working again.

I've even opened up the case and poked at the left shoulder button while the machine was running, and it still didn't work.

Has anyone else experienced this kind of silliness?

Although I have not personally experienced it, my friend has, and he thinks that it is because he played like Bleach and Brothers in Arms too much. Do not know what to do though.

If I were you I would install a small switch and remove the L button for now or send it in to nintendo. (follow the trace back, there may be a small open in it which you can bridge.

a broken trace is super easy to fix.
the button may not be soldered well or may have accidentally come off the board. check it out to make sure its all making a good connection

Well, I have an ... inverse problem. The LR button is pressed ALL the time (after my DS took a bath

) and when opening it up, I see absolutely nothing wrong. What could be the problem?

Good that you fixed it,
if you send in flashed DS for hardware repair, I don't think they'd care.
But I bet it has to be some serious damage so they don't have to turn it on and check =P
